That could work for some people but I wouldn't want the tax drag of bonds in taxable and my 401k doesn't have good target funds so I prefer to keep the bonds there and buy index funds in roth and taxable.

There have been reported cases of vanguard accounts "disappearing" that seemed to be related to attempted fraud so the account was locked down from any access until things were resolved.

To be clear the mega backdoor from your 401k isn't affected by your tira but regular backdoor is so rolling in can still be a good idea if the choices there are reasonable.

Second, PRF appears to be just a large-cap US index fund. As such any other large-cap US index fund that follows a slightly difference index will work. I have considered shifting some or all of the bond index fund in my 401k to the stable value fund that's at a 2.16% rate currently (right now it's a 50/50 split between them) but really I'm just not sure it makes that much difference in the long run.

I never do complete transfers because some brokerages will immediately close the account and then you have no access to account documents.

I'll point out that you do not want to ignore any account due to the possibility of fraud so set whatever account alerts are allowed and check the account manually at least once per month.

At megacorp you could put any percentage of your profit sharing bonus into the 401k but it counted against elective deferrals/roth BUT the plan also allowed after tax with a limit of 30% of salary on regular contributions so the bonus (which came early in the year) allowed you to get more total into...

You don't need the assets together to have a unified portfolio for instance mine is spread out over a number of accounts so just get a spreadsheet and figure out what your current asset allocation is and what you want it to be then make the changes and from then on manage it as one.

I have found the produce at Aldi improving over the years and I get a lot of it there these days but the only fresh I get there is beef because the chicken and pork is "enhanced with solution" and I can usually get comparable deals at the supermarket on sale.

You can also check to see if the new plan offers after tax non roth contributions with the option to convert or roll over to roth and if so will they be matched (megacorp did when I worked there so it's possible).

And you don't want to use ee bonds for rebalancing as they only make sense if held 20 years which is another problem because really in 20 years you should start dumping ee bonds at what might be a bad tax situation.

You can leave it there or do a second rollover (if they allow amounts that small) but did you tell them to convert the entire account or give them a dollar amount?

The second part is not a rollover. You rollover the traditional 401k to a traditional IRA, then you convert the traditional IRA (this is not a rollover) to a Roth IRA. Fidelity doesn't allow Roth 401ks. Also the law prevents you from directly rolling over a traditional 401k to a Roth IRA. There is nothing preventing you rolling over a traditional 401k into a traditional IRA, then doing an IRA conversion to a Roth IRA. I will believe you about the Fido so I'd sugg...

If you aren't age 59 1/2 or terminated the plan the law forbids in service distribution of employee deferrals or roth contributions but I'll say if your goal is fidelity roth why not just a roth 401k?

The only option to "fix it" if you already did the rollover is to come up with a 401k you can move it to so first make sure the new plan won't accept a rollover ira and if not the only real option is a home business with a solo 401k.

It's worth modeling what would happen with your portfolio with some of the events over the past years especially 2000 and 2008 but I'll say that I'm 64 and retired with 60/40 however I also have a pension that right now covers expenses.

I don't know about vanguard specifically but most custodians allow you to have multiple iras but that's just a way to make things a bit easier because you could just sell everything in the existing account to cash and roll all but the basis amount to the 401k.

Normally exchange can only be within an account and would have to be two different funds so I would say to check your transactions to see exactly what transpired.
