Re: how does an Inherited Roth IRA fit into a portfolio

I'm not sure I would take the RMD at the beginning of the year. I have an inherited traditional IRA. I do take the RMD at the beginning of the year and use it to go out to dinner. I don't want to pay much in the way of taxes on this account, so I don't need it to grow tax-deferred all that much. It is invested 100% in a total US bond index fund. I take the RMD at the beginning of the year, so that (a) I don't forget and (b) there are fewer shares to grow inside the IRA. In contrast, if I had an inherited Roth IRA, then growth inside the Roth is tax free and RMD withdrawals are not taxed. I want the Roth to grow as much as possible, so delaying the RMD to the end of the year (or at least to the high point of the year) does not change my tax...

Re: how does an Inherited Roth IRA fit into a portfolio

One thing to take into account: The inherited Roth IRA can be invested in REITs, Bonds, SCV, etc. My taxable brokerage is limited to Total Stock Market and Total International. but if I were to invest the inherited Roth IRA entirely in TSM and TISM and then re-balance across my other accounts, the money coming out could go straight into my taxable brokerage into the same holdings. That seems like it would be the best way to go. Thanks for helping me think that through. Your taxable brokerage account is most certainly NOT limited to TSM or TI, unless you have a very strange brokerage. You might choose such funds for tax efficiency or other boglehead principles ("3 funds"), but nothing stops you from putting whatever portfolio you ...

how does an Inherited Roth IRA fit into a portfolio

Should an inherited Roth IRA be treated separately from the rest of my portfolio since I'm taking RMDs?

I imagine if the RMDs are begin to bring the balance down over time while the rest of the portfolio continues to increase in value because of growth and contributions, it would trigger re-balancing events more frequently ... correct?

Re: First Taxable Investments - Getting Started

I would do all 529s first before taxable investing. Assuming your kids are on track to go to college.

529
1. possible state tax deduction
2. acts like Roth IRA when the money is taken out for qualified educational expenses

Taxable Investing
1. Even with very tax efficient investing (using only Total Stock Market and Total International) There is a tax drag of 0.5% to 0.7% on annual returns from the taxes you have to pay. This will compound overtime. Then there will be long term capital gains taxes.

so I think once you have as much as you think you need in the 529s then start doing taxable investing.

LOCATION CHANGE

I just called to confirm the reservation at Tark's grill and was told that the "just went under new ownership last week and won't be opening for brunch for a few more weeks."

This means the restaurant is closed at 1:00pm this weekend but should be available for our next meeting.

I made a reservation at 1:15pm at this restaurant:

http://www.thevalleyinn.us/

it's just a couple of minutes away from Tark's Grill

10501 Falls Rd, Lutherville, MD 21093

I'm open to suggestions on a temporary location for this next meeting if anybody has any other ideas.

Converting an IRA to a Roth IRA while on Medicaid

My mom is currently in a skilled nursing facility and on Medi-Cal (California Medicaid). In California IRAs don't count as an asset so she qualifies. Her co-payment to the nursing facility is equal to her Pension, Social Security and RMD from her IRA each month (minus $35 which they let her keep for spending money).

Is it against the rules to convert her IRA to a Roth after she's already on Medicaid? This would remove her RMDs from the equation and lower her monthly co-pay to the nursing facility. Over the years she has gifted cash to me which has been set aside and would be enough to pay the taxes on the conversion.

thanks

Re: Fidelity In Service Withdrawl / In Service Distribution

When my small private practice group set up our new profit sharing 401(k), I fought to have a provision added where we could do an in-service rollover each year. I'm able to put the standard $18k into a Roth 401(k) at Vanguard and then $35k into a profit sharing 401(k) at Fidelity (non-prototype account). I had to have one of my partners who is a trustee on the plan sign a piece of paper but I didn't need a medallion signature if the money was rolled over to a Fidelity rollover IRA. Having the money in a rollover IRA allowed me to convert it to a Roth IRA and in essence do a mega-backdoor Roth every year with all $53k ending up in Roth accounts.

Are you all residents of the same state? If you and/or your brother reside in state with no state income tax and mom resides in state with high state income that taxes IRA conversions/withdrawals like CA, it may be less advantageous to convert.

Good question. We all live in "high tax states." My mom and brother live in CA and I live in MD.

It's my mom's IRA. marital status=single. She is interested in doing the conversion because of health issues and wants my brother and I to inherit Roth IRAs and not IRAs. She has the cash to pay the taxes but wants to minimize the tax burden if possible. spreading it out more than 2016 and 2017 probably won't be an option.

for a $300,000+ IRA, would it make sense to convert $150,000 to a Roth in 2016 and $150,000 in 2017 to lower the tax burden?

it's the only IRA and all money is "pre-tax" from a 401(k) rollover.

$24k social security
$12k pension
$10k RMDs from the IRA

Mom needs long term care - assets into trust?

My mom recently had an accident and will no longer be able to live independently. She will need to go to a board and care or some other long term care facility. Her only assets are an IRA at Vanguard (low 6 figures), cash in checking and savings accounts (mid 5 figures), a mobile home (~$30k) and a car (~$10k).

Someone I work with suggested we "protect" some of those assets by putting them in a trust and have her go into a long term care facility on medical assistance. I'm not sure if that can be done in her case or what kind of lawyer I could talk to figure this out.

Any suggestions?

Re: Reporter doing story on expense drop when kids go off to college

I think it might depend on how prepared you are for you kid going to college and if your kid get's a "work-study job." If you have been putting a significant amount of money in a 529 for many years and are no longer doing this but actually using the money to pay for college it might actually result in an expense drop.

Pre-College:
$$$ per month into 529
$$ for food, activities, school functions, gas, etc.

In College:
Tuition being paid with money from $529
Room/board paid for in total cost of tuition if student in a dorm and eating in a cafeteria
Work study job pays for activities, gas etc

total result would be an overall drop in expenses for mom/dad.

Re: Mega Backdoor Roth IRA - My personal experience

With all due respect to WCI/EmergDoc, I think calling a fully taxed Roth conversion Mega Backdoor Roth will confuse people. There is no backdoor-ness. Anyone with pre-tax money in an IRA can convert as much as they want to Roth at any time. As more plans add in-plan Roth rollovers, soon people with pre-tax money in employer plans can also convert as much as they want at any time. The front door is wide open. I agree entirely. This example was an eligible rollover distribution followed by a Roth conversion. There was no back door. And I've seen other examples where people are calling a simple conversion a "back door" as well. Maybe we can just have a little private revolution and refine the definition of what Jim/EmergDoc/WCI name...

I don't understand this part - it was profit sharing which is an employer contribution. I guess you are saying you would have taken the profit sharing as income?

Doesn't matter - it all amounts to the same as if you had used an after-tax account instead of a profit share.
Yes. I'm part of a private practice group of 6 partners and all profits are shared equally so if the money didn't go into the pre-tax profit sharing account, it would have been taxed and distributed to me as a bonus and then it would have been invested in a taxable brokerage account.

EDIT 2: Was the 34.5k distribution with pretax or after tax money? If pretax then you may have outsmarted yourself and may have to pay taxes on that money. You can only megabackdoor with after tax 401k money. EDIT 3: Did you put the 34.5k into a regular IRA or a roth IRA? Typically when people speak of "rollover IRA's" its in reference to rolling over a previous employer 401k to a traditional IRA somewhere else. If a you put it in a regular IRA then I'm not sure you gained any benefit since you'll still owe taxes on the gains. Having a regular IRA makes doing backdoor roths more difficult as well. Re: Mega Backdoor Roth IRA - My personal experience

I'm sorry to say what you did is not a true Mega Backdoor Roth as commonly understood. You sacrificed pre-tax profit sharing money for Roth, which many can easily do by converting their pre-tax IRAs. Your $34,500 distribution is taxable, and at a high rate if you are able to do that much in profit sharing. A true Mega Backdoor Roth involves putting otherwise taxable money into Roth. Yes, I'm aware that the $34,500 will be fully taxed as will the $17,500. I'm putting as much as possible into Roth. The additional money I'm paying in taxes now would have gone into my taxable brokerage account and earned a lower return over the next 25 years because of the tax drag. I'm planning to retire in a CA where state taxes are even higher than they are...

Mega Backdoor Roth IRA - My personal experience

It's been a long time in the works, but as of today I have successfully maneuvered through a Mega Backdoor Roth IRA conversion. I first read about Mega Backdoor Roth IRAs a few years ago. In late 2013, my partners and I decided to change our retirement plan from a defined benefit plan to a profit sharing 401(k). For 2014 we would be allowed $17,500 in 401(k) contributions and $34,500 in "profit sharing" contributions. During the process when the pension company was writing up the paperwork, I requested two things: 1. That we be allowed to make our $17,500 in 401(k) contributions as Roth contributions 2. That we be allowed a one time per year in-service distribution of the profit sharing money ($34,500) We finally began contributin...

We had a great meeting on Sunday! Thanks for everyone who showed up even though the lunch took place during the Raven's game.

David Grabiner [Grabiner] gave a great talk on taxes.

Our next lunch meeting will be on Sunday, January 10th, 2016 at 1pm at Tark's Grill @ Greenspring Station.

Thanks!

Re: Term4Sale quotes realistic?

I had a good experience with Term4sale. got a lower price than what was quoted.

look into making an annual payment instead of monthly payments. you can save a little money.

Re: Master Thread for Baltimore/Southern PA Bogleheads

This is just a reminder that the next Baltimore/Southern PA Bogleheads meeting will be on Sunday October 11th at 1pm at Tark's Grill at Greenspring Station.

Please let me know if you can attend so I can finalize the number on the reservation.

We will be discussing taxes on investments.

We will have a formal presentation by David Grabiner (Grabiner).

Sandy Bittman (PapaGeek) has been working on a wiki page for the bogleheads website specifically on taxes on investments during retirement.

He may not be able to attend the meeting but his wiki page is worth reviewing with the caveat that it's a work in process.

- Thanks!

Re: Johns Hopkins and Baltimore

Areas immediately to the South and East of campus can get sketchy in places ...

To the West is a little nicer including the Rotunda shopping center (with a movie theater) and the Baltimore Zoo.

Immediately North of campus are some of the most expensive homes in Baltimore but not much else. Just neighborhoods like Guilford and Roland Park.

The areas right around the campus are relatively safe. I spend some time working at a hospital 1 block east of campus and I walk to lunch and see lots of college kids walking around.

If you have a car I would either drive North up to Towson (Towson Mall, etc.) or South to the Inner Harbor (very touristy).

Thanks for all the knowledge. I especially appreciate the polite way you correct people (me included) when they post something that isn't entirely correct.
