After-Tax 401k
Is someone willing to double check my understanding of After-Tax 401k? Base Information: My employer allows us to contribute up to 6% after-tax to our 401k. The plan allows two in-service rollovers to a Roth IRA a year. My Understanding: Any earnings the after-tax contributions earn before the twice a year rollover occurs are tax deferred, I could leave the earnings in the IRA part or take the tax hit now and roll this with the contributions into the Roth IRA. Questions: 1. If I do after-tax contribution to 401k, does this affect my ability to contribute to the Roth of 6k a year? I think the answer to this is no. 2. I have my Roth with another company that is not my 401k servicer, do I need to have them all with the same company? I'd rather...

After Tax 401k Questions
My employer offers an after tax 401k contribution with conversions allowed two times a year. So from my understanding of how they were explaining this. I can contribute up to my % allowed. This sits in an IRA of some kind. Then after six months they convert the contributions to a Roth 401k and any earnings during that six months sits in this kind of IRA? Then at the end of the year they'd do the conversion again in December. Has anyone else heard or dealt with this? Questions I have: 1. This wouldn't stop me from being able to do my post tax Roth contributions or make me have to do a back door Roth? 2. Is the small amount of earnings in that 6 month window before conversion to the Roth 401k, taxable? 3. Why cant it just be straight into a R...

Re: Fidelity vs Wells Fargo
WPA might not be right acronym, it was maybe PMA. Basically a checking/saving/brokerage account, if you had over 25k you got 100 free trades (which is gone now). I'll try to look up what type of account it was. I think now they might call it Porfolio by Wells, 2.95 trades?

Where is a better location for a brokerage and possibly 529 account? Fidelity or WF with a WPA?
I want to put some after tax into an SP500 index or some variant for a long sitting period.
Thanks!

Brokerage or 529's...
My wife and I have a 4 year old and are expecting baby #2 this spring. We've talked about setting aside some money for college. I'm torn between doing that with a brokerage account rather than a 529. Am I way off base for thinking like this?
Thanks!

brokerage accounts
I am maxing out 401k and ROTH contributions and was looking at starting up a brokerage account and possibly a 529. I live in a state that is not 529 tax friendly so I am less convinced on that other than it makes sure I get the kid something . I just plan on buying some TSM or something equivalent.
In looking at vanguard and fidelity it looks like both want your bank information. Why is that? How come I can't open an account and send in a check to fund it? I am usually weary of giving out my bank info and ACH's.

In case any are interested, here is what we ended up doing: Ate at the following places: Hopdoddy (quick burger and beer), Low Country Kitchen (southern food), Snooze (Breakfast), Sam's #3 (Breakfast), Cholon (Asian fusion), Lucky Pie (Pizza), Little Man Ice cream in lohi (I think that was the neighborhood name), ice cream in union station, beer at Wynkop brewery. Bigger Activities: Drove out to Boulder and Estes Park. Took bus shuttle up into park, hiked around Glacier Gorge area. Check out Red Rocks Amphitheater and did some hiking trails there. Walked down to Morrison and had some ice cream at a Cow place. Walked to the zoo and saw all the animals there. Walked to Denver Science Museum and saw the exhibits there and watched an IMAX film....

I decided to take a trip to Denver because of a cheap flight and hotel. I'll be staying downtown and am looking for ideas of things to do/see etc.
Was hoping some of you would chime in with ideas! Unfortunately the Rockies are out of town when I am there or I would have seen a game.
Thanks!

Wedding north of San Francisco
A friend is getting married in San Rafael, is it possible and/or practical to stay there and commute to do tourist things in San Francisco? The hotel is a decent price for the wedding with free breakfast. According to google its a 45 minute commute to San Fran from there across the bridge. I'd assume since the wedding is where its at, we would have to rent a car. I've heard parking in San Fran is not fun and can be pricey but if its only a couple days, I wouldn't mind too bad.

What state do you live in?
http://na.fs.fed.us/spfo/invasiveplants ... kthorn.pdf
If they are quick growing weed like trees with black berries sounds like they probably have buckthorn growing there. Buckthorn is a nasty invasive weed tree/bush. Where I live you are required to remove any buckthorn as its deemed invasive.
You should check with your city too, mine for instance as a compliance office you can call and ask for the city inspector to come investigate the property for maintenance issues.

You can do one time payments, monthly additional, etc to see how it changes your interest paid, time its paid off.

If you get an inheritance from an annuity, you have to liquidate that account and are hit with the tax all at once, or can make a beneficial IRA (5 year limit), or can make another type of account where you do minimum withdrawals.
Is the above true? How does one find more information? Also if you make the beneficial IRA does it make doing a back door Roth more difficult?

Home Depot and SuperValue are offering this as well.
It will not hurt your credit score and signing up was pretty easy at least through the Home Depot breach 1 year offer.
From my understanding, this wont stop people from using your credit just makes you aware. Its up to you then to fight it out to remove it.

Re: finding the leak(s) in underground sprinkler system
I suspected that our sprinkler system is leaking water, because I got a water bill of more than $100 and I only watered my lawn once last month. The problem is that I cannot see where it is leaking. My plan is to not winterize it this time (just turn it off), and wait until the next spring to have someone to turn it on and check the system. If it is leaking water, then I think there is no need to winterize the system and the water will just leaks. (I am not a professional, just want to save me some money). Why would you not winterize? If you have a leak it could simply be a bad part of one hose or sprinkler head, both of which are not that expensive to fix. Usually the system will have valves that control the water flow as well so you mayb...

My uncle wants to help his two grandsons about investing.
He'd like to have a main account but be able to track the two boys progress individually like two sub portfolios? Do online brokerages, e-trade, etc... offer that ability? Or is he stuck with having to open two different accounts?
Thanks!

You guys/gals are awesome, in case no one has told you yet. Several restaurant reservations now made. I will post them when I get a chance. I think we are going to rent a car for our last 3 or 4 days there, man parking looks like it is crazy expensive ($35 a day). We will probably try and book a Pearl Harbor tour for Friday because it seems the advanced tickets are already sold out and won't have a car to get there that day. Do you have to have any experince snorkeling or kayaking in the ocean to do it? We are from the midwest and are decent swimmers (lots of lakes) but the ocean is obviously very different. Is it worth while to book a tour to do either, if so recommendations? If I can get the wife to plan some stuff out I'll try to post a ...

So if I get him to transfer out of that fund, he'd take a 1% hit on the transfer? I assume that his planner would then start to charge him for services as he pays nothing right now but all he has is a roth anyways...

My brother has an AmeriPrise Planner and has his ROTH IRA in a John Hancock fund "Lifestyle Growth" Class C (ticker JCLGX).
First of all what is the difference between the different classes, they offer A,B,C? I assume A probably has a initial Sales Load charge of 5%?
Second, when I'm looking at the fund it says the ER is 2.14% is that really true??? Why would the planner recommend that fund? If I help my brother move to a smaller ER fund will he pay costs to move it? I wonder if that will piss off the Planner...

2012 Roth Contribution
I can put 5k in to my roth this year. I just have my roth in an passive heavy equity low ER right now.
So my question is can I put my 2012 contribution into my roth but put it in some kind of holder (cash?) area, and then dole it into the standard area at like a grand a pop over a period of time to try and dollar cost it out? Or am i worrying about nothing by putting 5k in. For 2013 I was thinking of just doing a monthly contribution so I dollar cost it out over the year. Thoughts? Thanks for your time and input.
edited to add: I guess it will be 10k (incl. wife's roth).

The ETF for TSM seems to have the same ER has the Admiral TSM.
If I opened a Vanguard Brokerage account, I'd avoid the 9.99 commission from e-trade I think.
For i-bonds, are those just individual savings bonds that you can only get through treasury direct?

Taxable investing [Portfolio Help]
Hi everyone, First thanks for all the information on this board. I learn more on here than from my fianicial advisor. I am currently reading the Boglehead's investing book, and one from Larry Swedroe called "The only guide to a Winning Investment Strategy". If one is already maxing out 401k (Fidelity 2040 Target) and ROTH, I've been thinking about some taxable investing. From reading on here bond funds are best kept in tax friendly accounts. So I was thinking of Vanguard Total Stock Market, Vanguard Total International Stock Market, and maybe some i-Bonds? As far as investing, I am a buy and hold. Questions: 1. Are those three funds ok to start off for taxable investing? (they are mentioned quite often in regards to taxable) 2. I ...
