You are correct in thinking an old 401k will not allow rollovers. Rolling it into your ira would preclude your backdoor Roth’s, so you would need to roll it to your Roth and pay taxes on it at your tax bracket. For 7 k, I wouldn’t bother doing a solo 401k.

Your reasoning is sound. Clark Howard says to pick the highest deductible you can afford, and only put in claims for catastrophic damage. If it’s any consolation, auto and home insurance is the one thing Clark Howard doesn’t believe in going with the cheapest provider. He loves amica and usaa due to their superior claims service.

The only thing similar to Roth as far as tax advantage is an Hsa if you have an hd health insurance plan. Otherwise, there is nothing wrong with a good old taxable brokerage account.

The IRS considers you to have one IRA, no matter how many individual accounts you have. As long as you have money in ANY trad ira as of dec 31, you will owe pro rata taxes on any back door Roth. So you need to convert the rollover Ira to Roth, or roll it into a current 401k.

I can’t say for sure, but I don’t think you can roll a trad 401k to a Roth 401k. The Bogleheads wiki does not mention such a transfer, nor does investopedia. Clark Howard recommends filing if the bill is $500 more than the deductible. This being the second accident makes me hesitant. I would pay it and Raise the deductible to 1k if you can afford it and it is possible.

As you say, they already have your info anyway. By signing up for it, you prevent someone else from doing it, plus you can check on things like stimulus payments recent tax return summary, etc. I see no downside.

I am using a charitable remainder trust for part of my assets due to I don’t think some of my beneficiaries are financially savvy, I wouldn’t bother with it if they were an accountant.
