Yep, this can come up, and this is a case where the for profit companies like Schwab and Fidelity will accept a lower start point than Vanguard. Nothing to be ashamed of etc.

I will note that Vanguard does have funds with a $1,000 minimum and it still may be cheaper to start with Schwab or Fidelity.

You don’t need Vanguard to do the Solo 401k reclassification between employEE and employER contributions. Vanguard does not report the breakdown of Solo 401k contributions to the IRS. One reason to do one big chunk (disclosure, I did a big DAF contribution this year) is a hedge against future tax law changes...

...it is really unlikely that they would change existing carry forwards in a tax reform. YMMV etc.

Robo advisors are doing many trades like this. Check out what ETF pairs Welathfront or Schwab, etc are using. I don't know if they use those specific funds.

California doesn't protect retirement assets from creditors for sole proprietors unlike some other states :confused Can you explain/unpack what you mean by this? Vanguard has a basically $0 solo401K (no rollovers in allowed, but both roth traditional).

Fidelity I think also has a $0 one that accepts rollovers but last I recall didn't do roth

Why not use one of those two? Or Schwab's offering?

FWIW, I've gotten conflicting advice from CPAs on this. Our current CPA said the HELOC I used to temporarily fund a loan would not be deductible and the new CPA we had hired said it would be... YMMV.
