Any investors from the 1981 - 1984 time period here???

Jack Bogle had Vanguard go no-load in 1977. But the SEC said no since the 8.5% sales commission paid for the distribution costs. The SEC then said Vanguard could sell the funds as no-load but not advertise it. Then in 1981, the SEC came up with the 12B-1 fee. Vanguard was then able to advertise their funds as no-loads. From what I read, Vanguard caused quite a stir in the industry going no-load during this time period. I purchased my first mutual fund in the fall of 1984. About 2/3s of the fund companies were still selling at 8.5% commission. Others were at 6.75%, there were the A, B and C shares with some companies and Fidelity was at 3%. The no-loads then were Vanguard, T Rowe Price, 20th Century, Safeco, Neuberger Berman from what I reme...

Are white, red, blue and other bright colors safer [for cars] than other colors???

[Title edited for clarity. Moderator Pops1860]

When driving in the rain, black color cars seem to blend in with the road, and silver and gray color cars tend to blend in with the atmosphere. Seeing car accidents in the rain, it seems the black, silver and gray color cars are on the side of the road hit.

I prefer red, blue and white colors since they seem easier to see in bad weather.

Anyone else prefer these colors for safety?

Federal Health Insurance & Customer Service Nightmares

In the late 1990s, Blue Cross/Blue Shield had a bad reputation for paying doctors small amounts and paying late. My doctor then said he would no longer accept Blue Cross/Blue Shield. Now my chiropractor loves Blue Cross/Blue Shield. They pay on time and do not nit pick over small issues. Eight years ago I had Mailhandlers that uses AETNA. With Federal supplemental dental insurance the procedure is to bill the primary health insurance and then send the EOB to the supplemental dental insurance. I use a different federal dental insurance that is the best for implants so the process is not automated. It took six months of calling Mailhandlers every two weeks just to get an EOB of $0.00. I was kept being told it was coming. Finally a rep knew wh...

When the pandemic hit, all lacrosse tournaments were cancelled. A fall lacrosse league at a high school went so well that a winter league was added. I was reffing in 25 degree weather and the wool socks made my feet warm.

I would recommend LLBean goose down gloves too. They may be picked over this time of year.

You can transfer your DAF balance from Vanguard Charitable to another custodian, such as Fidelity Charitable where their minimum grant is $50. I would call the receiving DAF and ask them for the latest instructions on how to do it. Also, you don't have to use Vanguard Charitable just because your taxable investing accounts are at Vanguard. You can donate shares from a Vanguard account to any DAF (although it likely will take longer so best not to do it the last week of the calendar year).
Thanks! Will consider. I have an account at Schwab now too!

Re: Annuity article by Wade Pfau

In this ad, Pfau does indicate that he uses pure index returns without fees. But he assumes the initial cap and participation rates persist for the life of the annuity. Individual insurance companies will know the actual rates they use for each year after issue. I don't know whether anyone knows the averages across the industry. With Pfau's connections with the industry, he could find out the rates used for at least one company maybe for a sample of multiple companies. It would be fascinating to see a more real world illustration using a set of actual rates. Of course, the companies would have to be willing to share that information. The performance of the annuity will be worse the lower those rates are. Assuming they will stay high looks ...

Safeguard Wealth Management does outstanding videos on retirement. They have a video on reverse drawdown to avoid the sequence of return risks. When retiring, go to a 60/40 bonds to stocks. Then do the Roth conversions. Once adding in Social Security, add back in more stock allocations. Reverse drawdown

Here is the best plan for traveling. Get a 60L bag such as the following: 60L duffel

Then get a 30L duffel such as the following: 30L duffel

When walking to the airplane, put the 30L duffel in the 60L duffel. Then before boarding the plane, the 30L duffel would go as the personal item under the seat, and the 60L duffel will squish somewhere in the overhead.

I do this all the time for long weekend trips. I NEVER check a bag.

New key FOBs and RFID signals capture - Hondas, Toyotas

I purchased a new 2023 Honda Accord. The key FOBs come with the ability to start the car by way of push button. I've learned that the signals from the key FOBs can be captured and programmed to steal the car. To prevent this there are options have the FOB wrapped in aluminum foil, use a faraday bag or a tin can. I purchased the faraday bags.

From the YouTube channels on Toyotas, another option is to turn the transmitting off with two clicks. I could not find any information on Hondas about doing the same thing. The Honda message boards are no where near as active as the Toyotas. The Honda salesman and parts department are of no help.

Put a 30L bag inside of it when going through the airport. The use the 30L bag for carry-on. The 60L will then squish anywhere in the overhead compartment.

Toyota still does not include Blind Spot Monitoring/Rear Cross Traffic Alert on the base LE models. That is extra

I just bought a car for my daughter in grad school. Looked at the Toyota, Mazda, Jeep and Subaru. The Toyota dealer had no inventory and said they could get a car for $5K over MSRP. I literally had to force myself to stay polite when the dealer asked if I wanted his business card. Ummm no thank you, have nice day. Mazda's dealer network was weird. I gave multiple dealers a written cash offer (I'll pay this much and come in to sign for it today). None of them took it. Then two weeks later (after I bought the Jeep) three separate dealers called me back to take my deal. The Mazda (CX5) was our first choice, but because the Mazda dealers were difficult to work with we kept looking and decided to buy the Jeep. At the time, there were almost 100...

For retired Feds, did you keep your FEHB in retirement and go with Medicare Part B? If you did that, are your doctor's limited? Tammy Flanagan's column on GovExec.com has an interesting article. None of these decisions seem to bring as much confusion and concern as the choice of whether or not to enroll in Medicare Part B. There are a few reasons why this is true, including: Your Federal Employees Health Benefits Program coverage will continue even if you elect not to enroll in Part B. Part B can be expensive. The standard premium for 2021 is $148.50 per person per month. If you and your spouse are enrolled, the cost is an extra $297 a month out of your retirement income. This is in addition to your FEHBP premium. Trickiest Decision The fol...

I just called Vanguard. They see the 12/31 statement on their end. It was not showing up on my end. The rep sent it to me.

Did not come in email or on the secure message tab. The 12/31 statement now is showing in the statements tab.
