fyi - regardless of what pc, mac, tablet, chromebook or phone, you can access the google cloud colab. You can open github repos or start your own project and save to google drive and share with others. (you need a google account)

Or see this demo with a pull of the bogleheads.org html

There are alternatives to google too.

Hi again Bogleheads - Check out this CNN article. It's pertinent, to say the least.... https://www.cnn.com/2023/12/20/media/siriusxm-cancellation-lawsuit/index.html On Wednesday, New York AG Letitia James announced she’s suing SiriusXM after an investigation discovered that the company “forces its subscribers to call or chat online with an agent to cancel a subscription, then deliberately draws out those interactions as part of its strategy” to prevent subscribers from cancelling their packages. In a press release, James said that a company’s difficult cancellation process is illegal. Just cancelled, I was in no mood to listen to any pitches, it took 32 minutes. Re: YoLink Smart Wireless Freezer Temp Alarm

I have a number of sensors - the other day I was washing the basement floor and my water alarm went off - I had forgotten I even put one down there. Nice to know it works when you need it. I have one under the sinks and dishwasher too. You have to have a hub . I don't have one but Yolink even offers a motorized valve that can shut the house water off remotely or in case of a leak. I also kept the old sensors (non wifi but the noise will wake the dead) in case of a leak.

Re: Should I pay more for a plumber to install garbage disposal versus a handyman?

Use the handyman and buy a set of these leak detectors/alarms with the savings. Place them under every sink, laundry, sump pump, toilet and dishwasher if you have one. No matter who installs it a leak could happen - could be a problem on the supply line side too or one of those braided hoses. As an amateur plumber - I lay down pieces of paper towel under a repair for a couple of days of inspections before calling the job done.

Re: T-Mobile, Xfinity, AT&T now requiring bank accounts to retain auto-pay discount

Let's say I don't have a debit card and don't what to setup ach due to TMobile's record for being hacked. Can I send them advance payments, Let's say the monthly bill is $60 with ach/debit autopay but $70, without ach/debit autopay, can I pay the current bill and prepay 9 more months? For example, $610 in advance to cover one month at $70, and the remaining 9 payments at $60? Seems like this would save $90 for example. Any way to do this?

With the time available for tv/streaming - we keep just one paid service at most so we get Apple tv just one month per year, maybe netflix two months per year, Amazon for a month, etc. We do splurge with the $2/month Hulu black friday specials (used to be $1 /month)

We also have an antenna/DigitalHomeRun/Lifetime Plex DVR with commercial skipping (one time cost of about $400) since we already had the antenna. I chuckle when I read about people with a $400 a month cable bill.

Here's a good place to start - Self-Employed Individuals Tax Center

Your net income is income "in the door" - (i.e. when you receive the cash/ach/check/vemo/barter) MINUS those allowable expenses to produce that income. Also, see this Schedule C information.

You most likely will be using a "cash basis" (see Cash Basis Accounting) vs an accrual basis.

We did the math, and with our low annual driving, didn’t really make sense to pay the extra few thousand premium for a hybrid.

Re: Would this car buying tactic work?

At this point of empty lots, no negotiating, and markups over MSRP, I don't understand the role or necessity of the auto dealer. Buying cars this way adds 30% to the cost according to Newsweek. The parent companies don't see any of the markups over MSRP. The customer is going through an unpleasant experience without any upside at all. If this is the new normal I hope that rules somehow change so that we can just order direct from all car companies as with Tesla. Exactly - the cause of this is big money from car dealer associations lobbying state legistlatures. This is why Tesla has decided to open showroom on tribal land. Here's something that infuriates buyers - and doesn't help the brand loyalty - dealers charging $200 for nitrogen tire ...

Re: Would this car buying tactic work?

Check out the caredge site and youtube channel on youtube for information. Read some of their forum threads by car buyers to see the shenanigans some dealers are pulling. They suggest NOT paying cash up front as they automatically figure out that they will be making 1/3 less from you. You can pay off the loan on the first payment. Try this at two different dealers that are advertising similar pricing for the same type/trim vehicle. As for negotiating ability - I've noticed some dealers are still operating on the theory a "bigger fool" will walk in the door so why negotiate? We've seen the same car at a nominal 50k value with thousands of extras (special wax, fabric protection, lojack...) PLUS a market adjustment and another dealer...

I'll see how the economics are at the end of the first paid month (three months from now - works out to $4/month to try it) and report back. My in-home cup of coffee is about $.24 /cup but I am not always home and this includes other drink types.

Re: Selling car online - buyer asking for VIN as question #1

You may want to run a report yourself. I saw a story where a car had an oil change at 20,000 miles but was erroneously reported at 120,000. Car actually had 25,000 when the owner wanted to sell it but had a hard time convincing people the mileage wasn't turned back.

Request a correction to a CARFAX Report

Odometer fraud: According to this NHTSA study (PDF), approximately 452,000 used cars with false odometer readings are sold each year, or 3.47 percent of all used vehicles sold. This means that if you plan to buy a used car, there is around a one in 29 chance you could experience odometer rollback fraud.

CarEdge claims they make a flat $500 from their warranty sales. You could use the pricing as a reference vs the dealer markup. I don't buy extended warranties but noticed a lot of coverage in the CarEdge YouTube channel about dealer extras (extended warranty, msrp markup, dealer added options, insurance products, etc)

Check out Caredge.com Father and son site with plenty of youtube videos on buying cars.

Price a warranty here: https://caredge.com/extended-warranty

Let us know how much the dealer wants for the same term warranty. Also check the terms and conditions on the contract.

My local library uses HOOPLA.

I check out an e-book through HOOPLA. I use my laptop to access the e-book. A desk PC would work just the same.

How does it work? I found it to be intuitive and easy. It is an extra step to establish a HOOPLA account but not difficult. I assume your library staff would help you.
Our library uses the LIBBY app and the OVERDRIVE apps - can borrow (electronically) books, audio books, magazines, etc. Get the app, search for your library, if that doesn't work, call the library if you need help. You can read most things on a phone, laptop, tablet, pc or a real Kindle.

A friend recommended this podcast and this specific episode. It made me reexamine some choices and habits. Balance between money, risk, experiences, health, etc. Most specifically the timing, you can't wait till you are 90 to climb Kilimanjaro. And sometimes people overestimate the bad but very unlikely possibilities.

Re: Are there real benefits of attending an expensive college?

Better schools, mostly but not always correlated with "expensive", tend to have better recruitment prospects. Great in-state schools can be a bargain vs private (say Stanford computer science degree ($56k/year) vs Berkeley computer science ($14k/year)

No offense to American Samoa but Jimmy (Saul Goodman) in Better Call Saul went to the America Samoa Law School (fictional school) - but I can bet you money that if it did exist, top-tier law firms wouldn't recruit there.

Re: Replacing Netflix's DVD Service

Here's my frugal strategy to avoid single-movie purchases. Not exactly the same as your issue but get us the entertainment we want at a minimal cost. I use the strategy of bouncing between services. We tend to stream more in the winter than the summer and quickly run out of things to watch on any service. In the summer months, we typically don't have the time to take advantage of premium subscriptions. So the solution for me is to bounce between a SINGLE service and keep them for no more than a month. For example, if I reactivated my Netflix subscription, I have a couple of series to catch up with and I would check for new movies. For HBO - maybe Barry and Succession. If I reactivated AppleTV, I would watch Ted Lasso and some other things. ...

Re: What frugal thing did you do today?

Fixed the oven myself instead of spending $450 to have a repair person do it. The oven stopped working last week. Did some quick research and realized the igniter was likely kaput. Yesterday I ordered a well-reviewed compatible model on Amazon ($24), and today I easily installed the new igniter with the help of a “Mundane Man” video on YouYube. The oven fired right up. Hubs, who didn’t want to DIY it, was impressed. I’m chuffed!! I did the same. Out of curiosity, did you pull the oven out? I ask because the first video I watched merely cut the wires and spliced the new one in (using heat proof ceramic wire nuts) without pulling the oven out. Much easier. I did that. Unfortunately, several failed fairly quickly. When I pulled the oven out a...
