In general, I've always been asked how much I would need to be paid to consider a different role. That also tends to be a satisfactory answer when asked how much you currently make. As your son will be pursuing relatively entry level roles, salary history is unlikely to matter to potential employers.

To me, the economic proposition of JD/MBA is indefensible given your circumstances. There isn't a guarantee that it will lead to career satisfaction either. My suggestion: take a sabbatical, return to work later, in the same role or a different one. Different setting and people around you will change your attitude towards work. I know mine did after taking a year off.

Re: Chinese stocks risk premium

I've developed skepticism for Chinese stocks over time. With 3% of world stock market capitalization for a GDP of global 19%, there just isn't a lot of Chinese stock to buy. If anything, based on threads like this, investor interest is over represented relative to accessible liquid Chinese investments. International investors would likely be overpaying for Chinese risk if anything. Nor is there great upside in public stocks in a communist country where powerful domestic executives are likely to disappear lest they wield too much influence outside the autocratic government.

Over its life, UPRO has returned over 27% annualized. So your results are not unreasonable. What you would have to think about is whether you can tolerate a 70% drawdown or perhaps even more catastrophic loss, and consider that this might happen right at the end of your investment life.

Hi, OP. I have three 27" monitors linked to an MS Surface via Dell docking station. It's a work setup and works quite flawlessly. You'll also be able to disconnect the laptop easily if you need to. It sounds like a lot of screens for what you are describing, but having more than one screen is good, and I wouldn't like to split in the middle with two screens. Apparently, Docking stations come with an internal GPU so it helps when you have a lot of screens.

If it were for my personal setup, I'd just get one big curving screen.

I don't know if the result is meaningless, if we think fund inflows and outflows are a gauge of investor sentiment (and the counterparties would be market makers, share issuers, and so on). The same investors who drive fund inflows might also be the ones who evacuate and drive market prices lower if sentiment changes.

Hi, OP. You are stressed and burned out, the cost of your career success. Take 6 months off, while spending a few hours a week exploring career options. Maybe you will find something different to do. But most of the time, people end up doing the same sort of job, but with healthier perspective. From a practical point of view, it's hard to discard your human capital if you have the experience to get a job that pays well. I wouldn't sell the house, as there's a chance you'll just end up in a similar position as before.

Re: Help English major apply to colleges that might offer merit scholarships

I think one should not underestimate the value of choice. You can be 1-2 years into Harvard and still choose essentially any kind of career you want. The paths to entry level jobs or any graduate program are abundant. Even after that, people will look at you differently for your whole life, and doors will open that would otherwise be closed to you. Some people won't make the most lucrative choice, and there is nothing wrong with that. But I think the distribution of potential outcomes that you have access to should not be undervalued.

That's a very nuanced topic. For an English major, I think you'd be hard-pressed to find evidence that there would be a good ROI on the extra cost.
True, but think about it as a huge Call Option. The worst you'd do is a couple hundred thousand dollars. The best case is quite a bit higher. Plus, once you're in the door, you normally find something new to do, rather than what you envisioned you like while taking PSAT.

Just in terms of economics, if you ask me, housing prices are going to enter a soft period for a while. A $2 million house now has $50k more in mortgage interest costs compared to just a few months ago. The typical house buyer riding on the edge of affordability can't pay the same price. Of course, it will take stubborn sellers months or years to drop prices. So, if it were me, I'd wait or at least insist on a discount from where a house would have sold earlier in the year.

Re: Relocate to Seattle or NYC

As a West Coast -> East Coast transplant, I'd comment that by far, the worst thing about living in the NY area is the commute between NYC and the suburbs. If you travel 1.5+ hours each way on train->subway 5 times a week, and on top of that, work 40-50 hours, your will to live will quickly disappear. Now, hybrid work is a complete game changer. If your commute is now 2-3 days a week, it becomes tolerable. You save money too - no longer need to live in a $3 million condo to be close to the office, or buy a $2 million house to minimize your train ride. Compared to most West Coast metro areas, I think the suburbs around NYC are better in terms of value and quality of public education. The tradeoff is/was commute, and of course weather. So, if ...

College education is a fallback. Entrepreneurship is not for everyone. I don't think you want to discover this later, and not have a degree that qualifies you for plan B. Anyway, college is supposed to help you decide on a career path, make connections, and mature intellectually. This is all true, and valuable, if you approach education productively.

Anyway, regarding financials, looks like tiny house plan is fine, and you can figure out in 3-5 years whether you're really going to retire then. Circumstances will change. You will be over/under your portfolio projected performance. Your career might be different. What you want for yourself and your family financially might also change. Good luck.

I'd just put it in some ratio of stocks and bonds based on your risk tolerance. You can afford some risk. If the stock market drops, houses should also be correlated with that to some extent.
