Re: NYC This Year or Wait? Has it sufficiently recovered from Covid?
NYC has been back from an experience POV for some time yet. But there are differences. - A dearth of office worker support businesses. Local delis, coffee shops, dry cleaners. Office occupancy has hovered around 50-60 percent for quite some time. - Dinner time has shifted earlier. Feels like 6pm has become the new 8pm. Many restaurants close earlier than they used to. Though this feels like it's slowly adjusting back. - I've felt a lower sense of safety on the streets of Manhattan, certainly more so around midtown than pre-pandemic. Partly due to less people on the streets, partly due to the pandemic itself. Nothing like the 80s, 90s, so I wouldn't classify it as dangerous. Just not as carefree as it was. I took or granted how safe I felt ...

Not sure I've heard of any evidence a laptop environment is more secure than a smartphone environment. Everyone I know who's been hacked or phished was through a laptop. Anyway, I do everything over the phone, banks, investments, 401K. With typical recommended security measures. Feel like I can detect and question suspicious activity much more quickly through the smartphone medium.

I transfer back and forth between them all the time. As previous posters said, Fidelity has routing numbers. You can add Fidelity to Vanguard as an external bank. Then you can do transfers. The other alternative is to open a Cash Plus account at Vanguard, which has routing numbers. Then you can add that to Fidelity.

I've used RPM and New Retirement. RPM is a really dense spreadsheet slog. Easy to make a mistake with it. But it's very powerful. New Retirement is much much easier to use. Clear web based interface. Enter in the data and very quickly you can have useful charts and tables and projections. Like any calculator, it's useful to look at its assumptions and vary them to see the effects. But all in all, a great tool for someone who might be intimidated by a spreadsheet. Also used MaxiFi. Like New Retirement better. Also, don't use the 14 day free trial then cancel, then sign up again in a year or two. That's bogus. Somebody worked hard to make a valuable product. Pay up and support the good work with a few bucks.

Re: Is Vanguard the ethical choice, or am I living in the past?
I know but what are the funds doing with all these profits? They go to lowering fund expenses. The funds charge expenses which flow up to the Vanguard management company. If there is excess revenue, then the profits flow back to the fund to reduce expenses. If revenues and expenses match, then there is no profit. Since Vanguard has no outside owners to get profits, there is no incentive for funds to over-charge on expenses because it just comes right back to the fund. So when you say "all these profits" there just isn't that much. Where does all the VPAS revenue go? It goes to cover VPAS expenses. If there is any excess, then the profit would go to Vanguard, with it flowing back to the funds as already discussed. I have never see...

Since I got into specialty coffee in 2017, a roaster that has been my go-to ever since is S&W Craft Roasting. The roast is always perfect and the beans are high quality, and, you won't find a better price from any other specialty roaster. Just my 2 cents. Besides that I enjoy light roasted, washed process, Central American coffees the most these days, especially Guatemalan. Ethiopian's are fun to drink as well, they just sometimes get too overpowering for me to have every day. Go to method of brewing is either in my Moccamaster drip or Hario v60 if I'm just brewing a single cup. Cheers :sharebeer On the basis of this recommendation, I ordered a few coffees from S&W. They were great and very reasonably priced for an artisan roaster....

Of one is concerned about freshness and flavor of coffee, it's best not to order from internet shopping megasites. You can order from a small batch artisan coffee roaster directly and the coffee is often roasted to order and shipped to you immediately so by the time it reaches you it's less than a week old, post roasting. Perhaps people are responding to the fact that they will warn you that wiring fraud exists out there and that you should double and triple confirm the wiring directions from a trusted source. Once the wire is out, it can't be retrieved if there was an error or a fraudulent wiring instructions. But this holds true for whatever institution does the wiring, a brokerage or a bank. Warning you about fraud is just a fiscally responsible thing to do. I would hope Chase or whatever bank would do the same. Anyway, you should not have any reservations about using them to wire money.

Also agree with Shimano SPD format for clipless, as you can walk in the shoe when not riding. Don't know if someone else mentioned this, but there are two different SPD shoe cleats, one easier to unclip from than the other. The easy to-clip-out of cleat is for smooth riding, the more grippy cleat is for rough mountain bike riding, to avoid inadvertently unclipping during technical riding. This is the small metal part that screws to the shoe bottom. Strongly recommend using the easier "road" cleat, as it's much easier to get out of, particularly helpful if you're new to clipless.

Re: my Fidelity account: an unknown linked bank?
UMB is Fidelity's partner bank. All my CMA activity goes through them. Totally normal to see them on your statents and transfers.

Re: Vanguard Customer Service Mega-thread
Just another experiential data point, I called Vanguard today to convert MF shares to ETF and the call was answered in about 30 seconds and the whole task was done in less than 3 minutes. This is the first time I've called them in about 15 years. I do everything online. The other call 15 years ago was for transferring a bunch of work-based retirement accounts into an IRA, which they also handled well. My experience, for what it's worth. I'm guessing my needs are too simple to challenge their customer service abilities, based on reading other people's experiences here.

Re: Is anyone tempted by value investing right now?
I'm a fan of the Rip Van Winkle investing philosophy. I only buy things that I would be comfortable holding if I fell asleep for 25 years. Total Stock and SP500 fit that bill. Can throw some Total Intl in there, too.

Re: Is COMPLETE retirement overrated?
I know people who own Subway franchises (and other food franchises) and who own gas stations. They work incredibly hard. The concept that either of these are do-nothing jobs you can coast through in retirement is so detached from reality, it's hard to know where to begin.

Re: Subaru Forester burning engine oil
Have had 5 Subarus in the family in 20 years. Never had an oil leak or any oil or any other engine issue. Very little by way of repairs outside of routine maintenance. 1 or 2 little things. Had a Forester, a Legacy, a Crosstrek and 2 Imprezas.
