Re: googleplay is not refunding an accidental purchase
Amazon has a bought by mistake option when asking for a refund. It is easy to buy by mistake if you are clicking through an ebooks series and getting them for $0 by kindle unlimited. When you buy one, it brings up the next one, except the last one in the series can have a charge if it is being ordered in advance.

Following along with interest. --Given OP's limitations, believe a turnkey automatic NG generator solution would be the easiest to live with. This solution works as long as municipal NG is available. If generator were housed in a quietened generator shed, it would help with avoiding OP's neighbor noise concerns. --But if NG is not available, then a small 3-7Kw tri-fuel (NG/propane/gasoline) quiet inverter generator and subpanel for critical loads, could keep refrigerator/lights running. Storage is required for generator and gasoline. And an alternate solution for heat is required. If external shed used to house generator/gasoline, and generator were installed/connected/plumbed/used from the shed, then OP would only need to start it when re...

Also, make a call or two to her town's (or your town's) social services, especially for elders. At least get her on lists for services if they aren't available now. They should be able to help you/her with information about food banks or other subsidies. I'm not going to suggest trying to find roommates or such. That may backfire from your description. Do you know if she recognizes her situation? It sounds like maybe not, given that she didn't pay off that credit card debt (and interest - ouch!). And try very hard to continue NOT to cross that nice bright line as you put it. That is for all 3 of you, andit is so important. The SS website utilizes Login.gov as an option (in addition to the legacy login). Setting up Login.gov for SS access was miles easier than ID.me for IRS. I helped my father-in-law (not tech savvy at all) set up his Login.gov account for SS access ealier this year and it just used some credit check type questions. My wife has a time release prescription where the brand name agreed much better with her than the generic, which caused problems either because of different fillers or the time release not working the same. Since there was a generic the insurance company would not pay for the brand name which was ridiculously expensive without an insurance negotiated price. She orders a 90 day supply. Wife has had a variety of health issues, has prescriptions for several expensive meds, been in the ER several times and hospitalized once. The only time we had trouble with a denied claim, it was an off label use of a prescription, which Medicare doesn’t pay for (or didn’t at the time), so switching to a Medicare supplement wouldn’t have solved the problem. Since then, the drug has been approved and it’s being paid for. I'm a little confused by this. It's Plan D that pays for prescriptions for me. My Plan D is from AARP, and it's AARP (well, actually I think it's United Healthcare who runs the plan for AARP) that approves paying for particular meds. There is a lot of variation among Plan Ds as to what meds they will pay for. Perhaps you me...

My Toyota Tacoma has a built-in inverter that should be able to power the natural gas-fired forced hot water heating system. If not, my system is old, but has a manual mode, which allows the boiler to cycle without power. I can force open a zone valve to keep one zone circulating, which is enough to keep the pipes from freezing. Sadly, I don't believe modern systems have this manual feature. Gas hot water heater and gas stove stop will still work without electricity. Can't use the oven, as it has an electric igniter, but we could probably make due with our propane grill leaving one burner off for indirect baking. Can you use a match to light the oven? Do not cosign anything for her ever. Also it sounds like she should be in assisted living or an even more helpful living arrangement, not buying or renting another place.

I would find some sort of honest IRA knowledgeable expert who doesn't charge major money to help sort this out. Do you have the paperwork to figure out what you need to fill out the returns? A letter to the IRS explaining that your MIL seems to have some degree of dementia or impairment due to the pain meds may help get the penalties but not the interest forgiven. The IRS is pretty decent. I have never set up automatic payments for anything, so I don't know about this, but it appears you have to contact the entities taking out the money to stop this. Re: Inheritance drama - enforcing the will
Being an executor is as said a lot of work. It takes a detail obsessed person like me to do it without going nuts.
As for getting rid of stuff, people, start doing that now with your own stuff. Take a look around and cart stuff to the dump, recycling. to the curb with a FREE sign on it, etc.
As to getting the court's permission to sell the house, etc. consider a revocable living trust.

Re: When should one start to seriously consider writing/having a will?
I wrote a will when I acquired a pet. I don't recall when I added stuff like a living will.
One thing I learned was to consider the possibility that things will change. So I leave something to a sib, but say if he predeceases me it goes to his kids etc, and I say any pets I have instead of Fido.

I think trex is what my previous neighbor used next door. Whatever it is, it's not wood and has turned greyish white.

Re: Citibank credit card - can you win a dispute?
I've filed several disputes with CapitalOne. They were all resolved easily in my favor.Normchad wrote: ↑Sun Jan 23, 2022 12:57 pm You guys are starting to worry me.
On all my 30 years, I think I’ve filed maybe 5 disputes, usually small stuff like $30. But once for over $2000. I’ve done this with both Citibank and Chase. And in every single case, it was trivially easy, and the card company handled everything very professionally.
It’s been a while though. So I’m getting worried that they’ve changed…..

Re: Inheritance drama - enforcing the will
...All of the belongings were left to my wife... Let everybody win. Just contact the executor for the keys to the condo and storage unit. Tell the executor you will be there in (whatever) days to clean out the condo and the storage units and leave them "sweep clean". The executor shouldn't have to bother with the belongings if their destiny is clear. "Belonging" include the desirable and undesirable, to me it suggests that she is the designated cleaner. If you take it from that perspective there should be no dispute. You and wife pay for transport/disposal of goods. Maybe she already has the keys? All the older people in my family, including me, have given keys to their sibs, etc. I am not sure she can legally swoop in ...

Re: Citibank credit card - can you win a dispute?
I submitted this chat transcript as well as a receipt and a picture of the items with price tags on them (this was an online order for groceries) showing the overcharge. One thing to be aware of is that with Instacart is that the price you pay is higher than the price in the store. That is how they make their money. The few times I used Instacart I really did not like it since I had no clear idea of just how much extra I was paying for their service. If they mark up something like meat by 10% you may have run into a situation where you are seeing the price on the package which is the lower in store price. I switched to a use a different grocery store which did not use Instacart so that I could get the in store price. I do use Instacart bec...

Wow, is that the default? Well, the web says it goes to the person's estate.Sandi_k wrote: ↑Sun Jan 23, 2022 10:59 amGreat point!!BerkeleyChris wrote: ↑Fri Jan 21, 2022 10:30 pm Given what you've written, I'd recommend that you sit down with her in person and log in to each of the bank and investment accounts and verify who the beneficiaries are and help her update where necessary. If she has not updated account beneficiaries, it is very likely the beneficiary is her ex husband. These assets will pass outside the estate, it doesn't matter what her will says.
My now-deceased BFF did exactly this - had her ex on her Fidelity account. She had no contingent beneficiary listed, and he pre-deceased her.
There was nothing we could do...so $25k ended up escheated to the state, AFAICT.

If the current house is the one she really wants and plans to return to some at point, she might consider renting in the other area. I am still not clear on the reason for two houses. Perhaps there is a valid reason. Lots of people do have two houses.Dottie57 wrote: ↑Sat Jan 22, 2022 12:03 pm An unoccupied house is a big risk. The insurance company will need to be notified. Of the unoccupied status of the house and they may refuse to insure. If I were you I would push her to sell if she moves. Make the hard decision as to what to keep and then sell , gift or donate the rest. An unoccupied home is asking to be looted or worse. It will have problems that will need to be fixed, property taxes etc.
Good luck convincing mom to sell.
