Re: Is buying a rental property even worth it?

We bought 15 rentals between 2010-2012. A mix of 4-plex’s, duplex’s, condo’s, and single family’s in both nice parts of the city and not so nice. As RE has appreciated we’ve offloaded the poor performing properties and stick to single families, all of which do very well. We had a 4-plex in a great a...

Re: What are you listening to now

I’ve been watching the Tiny Desk concert series on YouTube lately. It’s a variation of artists that play live in a tiny NPR studio. The music is awesome (Sheryl Crow, Wu-Tang, etc).

Re: At what cost/savings would you install solar panels?

We’ve had quotes for solar a number of times and the financial benefit wasn’t there, it was more about a “want” to do than a “need” to do. The deal breaker for us was that we didn’t see ourselves in the house forever, and selling the house with a solar package was another risk on ROI.

Re: Career advice - internal job transfers

It feels like the best of both worlds would be to find ways to make Job C more challenging. Are there any opportunities to work on some interesting side projects? What’s worked for me in the past is just to start working on a project that will benefit the department. If you have good management that...

Re: Bench seats vs captains chairs in SUV second row?

The captains chairs work best IMO. Although you say you may not need it, it’s easier to access the back seats by going in-between the captains chairs.

Re: personal investing

Does this guy provide you some confidence and make you feel financially comfortable? I’m not sure if I would feel comfortable changing my financial management strategy heading into retirement if I’d been working with a Trusted Advisor for a long time. I’d personally not worry about 1% if you like wo...

Re: Can I Dump My Emergency Fund?

Personally my emergency fund is for my wife to be able to manage her life if something happens to me. If I get hit by a bus tomorrow, the last thing she needs is to worry about bills, selling stock, asset allocation, which accounts are where, life insurance, etc. I keep a years worth of cash on the ...

Re: Am I already out of luck? (Career advice)

I’m in a different engineering industry but I see this all the time. In fact many of our best engineers and managers have unconventional backgrounds and didn’t start in their early 20’s. I’d be aggressive in your job search, interview anywhere, and most importantly when you get a job, crush it! Afte...

Re: Major renovation work for the house

We did the same thing 2 years ago. If you finish the basement first you need the kitchen plan and plumbing done before you finish the basement. Our neighbors did that and lived in the basement while the kitchen was renovated. I definitely recommend a designer and contractor for a job like this. We a...

Re: How to decide a job change from Chicago to Houston?

We recently moved to Houston and live up north in the Woodlands. I have little kids and so far it has been great. My company has offices in Houston and other big US cities. Many of my coworkers are transplants and all seem to enjoy it. Most of our neighbors are not from TX and all seem to like it. I...
