Re: how to choose a general contractor
Assuming you find a General that is licensed and insured, how do I ensure that everyone who comes to do work from them or from the subcontractors are also license and insured. Does every single person doing any work need their own insurance and license or is it just the company? If the company, is it just the contractor or also the subcontractors? My home insurance mandates license/insured for it to kick-inn on if there's any liability issues, but I don't know how to check the papers of every individual on a team that comes into a unit to do work.
The work in question is a condo bathroom remodel (including removal of tub and placement of shower walk) paint job, counter tops and cabinets, and some light fixtures and handyman stuff.

"Pay off" a 900k mortgage with 600k?
Suppose I had a $900K mortgage at a low rate of 2.5% and could buy a $600K immediate annuity with time-certain duration length linked to the remaining years on the mortgage that would cover my monthly payments until the mortgage was paid off and it would cost me $600K. Would this be a good deal? What are the considerations I should think of? Tax on the annuity income seems to be one. Anything else?

Re: Protect rollover IRA from potential lawsuit
Is there a distinction between ERISA for funds in the Brokerage Window (I.e. Fidelity BrokerageLink) portion of the plan vs the regular portion? I have a new plan that allows 95% of the 401k balance to be in BrokerageLink and able to trade stocks and ETFs, so it’s appealing to move all my 401ks there.

I could increase it, but then they’d just seek $5.5 million for the same reason. It’s in a 401k already. I don’t think I can do a reverse rollover after the hypothetical car accident and then claim ERISA! But if I could, that’d be good to know.

Re: Asset protection for rollover IRAs in Virginia
Did we ever come to a conclusion on this topic or any updates since then? I may end up living in Virginia long-term and have 310k in a Roth and 585k in a 401k pre-tax. I’d like to roll the 401k over to a rollover IRA but then my total in IRAs is 895K. And I can see that total amount greatly exceeding the $1.3M I see mentioned on some asset protection sites as the VA limit for non-bankruptcy creditor claims.

Re: My car insurance rate is $1000/month. HELP
My experience over the years is 2 tickets + an accident in any 3 year period will cause a massive spike (to the levels referenced by OP) for companies like AAA and GEICO. Progressive, which never seems to have the best rates when I have a better driving record, always provides me with the best rates when I'm in the situation described above.
My educated interpretation is that some companies are breaking-even actuarially by surcharging bad drivers and giving discounts above the actuarial expectation to good drivers and trying to make it up on volume / keeping the float, whereas other companies are just trying to write to an actuarial break-even across the board.

The current valuation is probably pricing in lots of things including future Mobility as a Service, being able to dramatically increase battery life at low cost, and some other things being hinted at recently by Musk such as licensing Tesla’s technology to other auto makers that are better at production and logistics at scale. Lots has to go right. Of all those, Mobility as a Service is probably the biggest long shot/questionable item. At least in the short term.

I made that clarification. Asked twice. They said all insurance companies in Texas don't cover passengers in one's car for bodily injury except with the PIP/Med Payments, which only goes up to $10k. I haven't been able to find anything on Google on this, but find it odd that nobody else in Texas has an issue with this besides me. The agent said he'd been doing this for 4 years and I'm the 1st person to ask about limits higher than PIP ($10K) for at-fault injuries to passengers. Weird. I have Umbrella. I suppose I could just keep assets in a 401K and it'll take me quite a while in that scenario to get past the $1.3MM limit on IRAs. But I like to dabble in individual stocks and ETFs from time to time and my Roth IRA has done way better over time than my 401K for that reason. Oh well.

What would it take for the community to agree on something under 4% for a SWR?

What I’m going for is to position myself as a jack of all trades in the non-technical upper echelons of individual contributor paths of IT with the degrees, the experience, and the certs. So, MBA, CSM, CSPO, RTE, Lean Sigma (though ASQ doesn’t certify for it), maybe PMP which I think is outdated but I still see in an unusually high number of job listings, especially for program managers. My hope is this approach would not only open more doors but also be attractive to hiring managers who want people who can do multiple roles. If anyone has any further thoughts on this or on the original lean sigma cert question, would be much appreciated and thanks for the responses so far. Re: Asset Protection of Retirement Accounts - How to withdraw?
No. I'm asking a theoretical question. This doesn't apply to me but it's something I think about. Like, would I need to have everything in an IRA with check writing privileges? And, if so, would I then need to be in a state that fully protected IRAs from creditors vs. a state like, say, Wyoming or Virigina. I suppose I could avoid this by leaving assets in a 401k, but I don't know of any 401ks that allow for check-writing. This board doesn't allow theoretical questions, unless there's something about it which is personally actionable. Is there some type of decision you're trying to make? Yes. If I move to the DC area, contemplating locating in Maryland instead of DC or Virginia because of this. My understanding is DC and VA cap total IRA b...

I agree with you on the value of certs. I already have ITIL Foundation, CSM, CSPO, and RTE certs, and of course the associated experience.
Not sure if I see the value in PMP anymore. What companies are doing waterfall these days? Government agencies and anyone else? Although I often see it in job postings requirements for program manager roles even if the underlying works terms are agile, and even though there’s a separate PMI certification for program management. Go figure.
Do you have an opinion on the six/lean sigma certification org question?

Lean Sigma seems to be more valued these days, but there’s no clear leader besides maybe IASSC which isn’t as recognized. anyone looked into this issue and come to a conclusion? Asset Protection of Retirement Accounts - How to withdraw?
Suppose you have all of your assets in 401ks and/or IRAs in a state that protects IRAs from creditors and bankruptcy. And you're retired so there's no wage income. So you're basically judgement proof. But as soon as you withdraw funds from the 401k or IRA, it hits a regular bank account or something that can be attached/garnished from, right? So how do people who have setup their assets like this for creditor protection and then receive a judgement do basic things like pay bills?

I don’t know either, hence my question. But I was just pointing out that the futures contract explanation made no sense. Unlike USO, these trusts do aim to follow the spot prices. And I only have 10% of my assets in them. To answer the post on why invest in something that doesn’t throw off dividends or interest or growth, I’m doing it due to the enormous increases in federal reserve balances that won’t unwind for a long time and the large increases (and rate of increase) in fiscal debt. But the tracking error today is really ticking me off.

Re: Why are GLD, SLV, IAU down today?
Ok, but these etfs aren’t like USO. They aren’t designed to track next month’s commodities delivery. So my question still stands.

Why are GLD, SLV, IAU down today?

Re: My 2017 CRV is a victim of the dreaded oil gas-dilution issue
I have a 2018 CRV and believe my car suffers from this because I smell gas in the cabin when the a/c is pulling in air from outside. As a result of this, i always use recirculate, which works well. Check engine light (and all the others) came on just past 40,000 miles. Took it in to the dealer and they put in a software update and the lights went off. The next day, they lights came on again and they diagnosed it with a bad fuel injector kit based on the cylinder misfire code. Hondacare (which I bought) paid for it. I asked them if they thought this was related to the oil dilution and they said no because I mostly drove it on non-short trips in California. Haven’t had any other issues with the car before or since then, although haven’t drive...

Re: My 2017 CRV is a victim of the dreaded oil gas-dilution issue
I have a 2018 CRV and believe my car suffers from this. I never took it in for that alone. Haven’t had any other issues with the car before or since then, although haven’t driven it much during the shut down and this isssue happened just before that. None of the oil shops I’ve taken ...

Re: The Mega Backdoor Roth IRA
I’ve read a few comments, but don’t think I came across an answer to a question I have. Right now, I feel my retirement accounts make up a significant portion of my overall portfolio. I really want to focus more on investing toward my taxable account so I have the option to retire at age 50. We have the income to invest in my wife’s post tax 401k and her employer allows it. We already max out her 401k, my TSP and our IRAs and will continue to do so. I understand the benefit of investing in post tax 401k and converting to Roth IRA. I can’t figure out why I would do that as I would have this portfolio that is significantly weighted toward retirement accounts and lacks the funds I want in taxable which would allow me to retire at 50? Retireme...

Why not consider going half VTI and half QQQ so you’re still tilted towards the stocks you mentioned but a bit more diversified.
