OP, I am in those same American funds at a big broker except I started investing in those funds about 15 years ago. I saw the light two years ago and started putting new money at Vanguard, but Growth Fund of America and New Perspective have done very well and New World has performed better than most...

My American Funds New World Fund has crushed my VWO over the last 1, 5, and 10 years and has beaten it even considering the 5.75 load. I am tempted to dump some emerging markets and I think VWO will be the one to go.

Yeah. It's funny to think of dividends as "gains" sometimes. My XLE energy fund went from about 60 at the beginning of 2020 to 22.98 at its low in March, yet they still paid "gains" to me in March.

So a dividend is a "forced sale". But if I were to choose to sell some shares, I only pay taxes on the gains. But I have to pay taxes in the whole dividend when the sake is forced.

Your situation would be tougher if the advisor is a long time family friend. That's my situation. (Different firm). don't think I pay AUM but each trade is $50.

There comes a point when you might consider selling something because it's been "down" for 7-10 years. My VWO for example. Not sure that fund will ever see glory days.
