Spring is here. :beer

I always get excited to hear the spring chorus of male Red-winged Blackbirds! They’ve been really loud this past week. The Black-capped Chickadees are also singing a lot.

I’ve also been seeing more American Robins hanging around and eating juniper berries and also saw my first Mountain Bluebird.

Also, the usuals: Spotted Towhee, Black-capped Chickadees, Song Sparrows, Eurasian Collared Doves, Juncos, House Finches, Red-breasted Nuthatches, RT Hawks, Crows and Ravens, Mallards and Canada Geese. The House Finches have started their nest on the north side of the house again…. :|

Re: 4-6cyl turbo suv

If it doesnt have to be a turbo, Mazda has a very nice naturally aspirated 2.5l engine with a lot of great engineering in it. Very reasonable gas milage and a bargain in the CX-5 and CX-50, too. Especially in the Select trim. Higher CX-5 trims do have a Turbo option. We have the CX-5 with the Turbo Signature level trim. Lots of power, but not as good highway mileage as our old Acura with a 6 cylinder. It checked all of the boxes except for gas mileage when we got it but a some of the 'features' are somewhat of a nuisance. One in particular is the intervention braking if one is approaching, from the rear, a car making a right hand turn. Even at its least proactive setting it can be unsettling. You can turn it off but need to do it each time...

Worth it? Not in my experience. They were nice looking in the beginning. However, the stitching fell apart and holes developed within a couple years and I didn't find them very comfortable. I actually prefer Merrell leather clogs instead - much better arch support, durable and you can add socks. YMMV.

Re: Bird watchers – what birds are you seeing?

I saw a few interesting things at a state park recently (an Important Bird Area aka “IBA”). The most interesting was watching 4 Bald Eagles (winter is a better time around here.) I first saw one in a tree and eventually 4 together as a group on the ice – 2 juveniles and 2 adults. I think they were related but don’t know that much about eagle behavior. It was fun watching them take off and land. I think it takes 2-3 years for the juveniles to get their white head, etc. I also saw a Great Blue Heron flying close by, a large flock of Red-winged Blackbirds (males) and other common birds like gulls and Mallards. 2 Magpies gathering sticks for their unique nest. https://www.featheredphotography.com/blog/2016/08/04/anatomy-of-a-magpie-nest/ Other ...

Re: Bird watchers – what birds are you seeing?

The other day while driving to work, I saw two crows chasing a hawk. I took a little time at a stop sign to watch (no one was behind me). The crows chased the hawk to a tree, where the hawk settled while the crows kept circling and dive bombing. I didn't have binoculars to identify what kind of hawk, but it was interesting to watch. It's theoretically NOT nesting season for crows in California yet, so I'm not sure if they were defending a nest or just generally keeping the hawk away from the trees where they like to roost and nest. It's fun to watch the smaller birds "dive bomb" and chase, etc. when hawks (and probably eagles) are around. I wonder if it is just a natural instinct against raptors even outside of nesting season. I ...

When we lived in Milwaukee we lived in a high rise on the lake. A Peregrine pair nested on the 20th floor - we were on the 5th. We got to attend the chick banding. The banders had to wear full leather gloves with leather arms and had face shields to keep from being injured by the attacking parents.

From time to time I noticed that it would "snow" pigeon feathers outside our window after the Peregrines at their meals.
Sounds like a fun experience to watch that!

I would replace it. My old Jenn-Air DW was still working after 19 years when I decided to upgrade it to a Miele about 4 years ago. Never had a single repair on the old one but the Miele is much quieter and there were scratches on the old one. I agree with the post above about finding a good installation person. The Miele tech had to return and fix the hoses after the big-box guys installed it incorrectly.

Consumer Reports has some good resources on dishwashers. I think Yale Appliances online is another one.

There are a number of BH threads on dishwashers including a recent one re: Bosch vs. Miele. Just search at the top.

Congrats :beer

FWIW, I came across a podcast on this topic not long ago (people starting to save for retirement later than many):

"Catching up to FI". I believe one of the co-hosts is an ER doc.

The times I've listened, they have had some good guests on. You may find it interesting.

I'd heard most of the songs but Patsy Cline was new...and not half bad...for country. :D
A great song by a great artist.

Here’s another good one: Walk Like a Man — The Four Seasons (1963)

And then there’s Walk on the Wild Side — Lou Reed

Walkin’ the Dog — The Rolling Stones

Walkin’ on the Sun — Smash Mouth

Walking on the Moon — The Police

I Walk the Line — Johnny Cash

A Walk in the Black Forest — Horst Jankowski
Didn't see this one listed :beer :

"The Walking Bass" - John Clayton (bass player) + band

Re: What Movie Have You Recently Watched?

I just watched Let's Get Lost. Documentary about Chet Baker. Baker is incredible. I thought it would be a biography and was disappointed that it was not. To my mind I would be interested in the story of how he got to be from a country kid to a jazz great, then next section how he became a drug addict, and then next section to the consequences of that. It was not that. It was more a bit about when he was playing jazz as a young person and then a bit about his life more recently in and out of drug use, and toward the end a little about his family that he doesn't see much. It was good and recommended but not a biography of his life. Sounds interesting. He had a unique sound. Where did you see it? I checked IMDb and they don't show any streami...

The reason I was thrown off was because in my neck of the woods in IL, the wren I see is the house wren which is really tiny.
Are your wrens big, bold, bossy birds? I do love cactus wrens!
Wrens are cute birds. I usually see House Wrens but sometimes hear Canyon Wrens (hard to see as they nest high up on rocky ledges in my area.)
