help locating a post about Sam (?) investing at market peak?

Fellow bogleheads, there is a hypothetical that has been posted on this forum multiple times, but I am having trouble finding it. The scenario is "Sam(?)" investing at the peak of the market followed by a crash, and data shows that Sam still garners overall growth by "staying the course" over the long run. Could someone help me locate the exact hypothetical? Thanks :sharebeer

Re: Safe to Travel to Egypt in 2024?

We went in April 2023, the camel market was cancelled because of the civil war in Sudan had just started at that time. I don't remember what the state department's rating of Egypt was at the time, but there was no open conflict in Palestine at that time. Whatever you decide to do, Egypt is the most impressive and the best preserved ancient culture I had ever encounter. If you don't go this year, please go when it is safer, and I intend to make multiple return trips.

Re: Mid-career change to law?

If attending law school has been your life long dream, and you have the financial stability to do it, then I wouldn't hold you back. Law school does teach you a different way of thinking. You'd understand the entire structure and system of our country - and also the world to some degree - under a different light as a result of the legal education. Attend the most prestigious law school you can get into, the more prestigious, the better. The reason is 3-fold. One, your professors would be world class and your peers would (hopefully) be intelligent and studious which make the education experience much more enjoyable. Two, your legal career would have the most options, for example, would you like to clerk for Chief Justice Roberts or Justice K...

Go on the state bar's website and look at the committees and their corresponding members and leaders. For example, if your lawsuit is about family law, I'd look at the family law committee's members and start with them.

Re: Rigid foam board insulation for attic access door

It's best to use extruded polystyrene which more dense and has a much better R-value than expanded polystyrene. It's also much cleaner to cut and is usually pink, blue or sometimes green. Expanded polystyrene which is a lower R-value looks like it's made of little white balls which make a mess when you cut it and doesn't hold up nearly as well. I just happened to buy some of the GreenGuard stuff at Lowe's. They have it in small 1"x2'x2' pieces which would likely be a good size to cut for attic hatch insulation and is easy to put in your car. I got it yesterday for about $6.99 per piece. It can be doubled up if you want it to be thicker. would this corning one from Home Depot work similarly well? https://www.homedepot.com/p/Owens-Corni...

Locum hospitalists like myself are always paid per shift on an hourly rate. That is why the hospitals have all the financial incentives to pile on the patient/doctor ratio. RVU is conceptually more equitable but in practice, I rarely see it working to the advantage of physicians. A prominent staffing company just settled a class action suit for underpaying RVUs.

Mid-career hospitalist, has been a local locum in Texas for a few years. Recently, most of the hospitalist groups and hospitals in the area have been bought out by various private equity firms who put profit above everything else. Would like to see if there are still smaller, more independent locum groups that the forum recommends. Thanks. How has the job changed under PE? Everything turned worse. As a starter, intentional understaffing which endangers patient safety. Census is sometimes as high as 40+ patients per hospitalist and the pay is based on approximately 18 to 20. Without giving too much details, one place cut my pay for a few hours after I had already finished my shift because they weren't as busy as they had hoped so "they...

Thanks all, changing the AGI did not work. Will have to mail it I guess. You give up too easily. It isn't due until mid-April. I'd suggest contacting HRB and find out what that code means. It doesn't look like a standard IRS reject code. Sending paper is fraught with many issues - although if you owe money, the delays on processing the paper return aren't as impactful. Thank you for the encouragement to not give up too easily. I heeded your advice and called HR block. Re: Moving to Law Firm/IP/Patent

The law firm needs your expertise because the law firm's existing or potential client needs this particular type of knowledge. The corollary is that once the law firm no longer has this client or this client no longer needs the law firm (they could hire their own in-house patent attorney/agent) or the technology, then the law firm no longer needs this technology. You could, I am sure, work on other technologies, but your competitiveness would no longer be your specific technical knowledge but how many hours you can bill which undermines work/life balance greatly.

What are your options if the law firm no longer needs the exceptional experience you have?

I spent two and a half weeks ten years ago around late November on what is often called the "historical circuit", visiting Addis, Aksum, Debre Damo, the Simien Mountains, Lalibela, Gonder, and Bahir Dar/Lake Tana. Travel within the country was a mix of Ethiopian Airlines for the longer trips and local minibuses for shorter lengths. I didn't use a tour operator so don't have a suggestion there. I just booked the flights as needed and arranged the bus rides and hotel rooms on the fly. I enjoyed it quite a bit, it was a good mix of historical and natural sites, and the weather was pleasant (as I understand it year round due to proximity to the equator). The culture is unique, and as monuments go Lalibela is certainly the awe inspiri...

maximizing TSP contribution (YTD for PP 23?)

Fellow BHs:

My agency is paid via USDA, so I think we have 26 pay periods in 2019. To maximize my agency contribution, I set my bi-weekly contribution at 730, 730 x 26 = 18980 (almost the 19k limit).

Today, I looked at my YTD TSP contribution as of PP 23, and the YTD number is 17,502. Is this where you are? It does not seem right because 23 x 730 should be 16,790.

I want to make sure I get the agency match every time. Given that there are three pay periods left, (19000 - 17502)/3 = 499. I should reduce my contribution for the remaining three pay periods? Something is wrong here but I cannot quite figure out what.

A had some issues with an Apple product so he googled for Apple's customer service number and made a call. For some unknown reason, the first on the search result for his search is a fraudulent number pretending to be Apple customer service. So he called the fraudulent number and - long story short - gave out his debit card number. (BTW, I tried searching for Apple support on google and everything looks legitimate to me. Been thinking about visiting Ethiopia, trying to decide which tour operator to go with. We had a good experience with G Tour India but would like to consider some local Ethiopia tour operators if possible.

Some specific questions:

(1) which tour operator did you use and do you recommend using the operator?
(2) how many days did you spend in Ethiopia?
(3) pointers for a first-time visitor?

I am looking forward to hearing about your fabulous experience in Ethiopia. Much obliged for any input you might have.

Cats are natural defenses against mice. In fact, a parasite in a mouse's brain is controlled by a chemical in a cat's urine so the mere smell of a cat's urine drives the mouse away.

We used the old fashion traps when we lived in an older house. The best bait was peanut butter - the stickiness was crucial. Other baits were snatched away by the clever rodents without setting off the trap. But a decade later in my new house, I still have PTSD when I step into my kitchen from the fear of stepping onto a trap  . I never stepped on a trap but was always careful walking around in that kitchen where the traps were.

Federal employee dental insurance

Please help me understand how dental insurance works for federal employees. It looks like to me that for maintenance items like cleaning, the claim has to go to the patient's health insurance (medical insurance) first, before it goes to the dental insurance? For example, if the patient has Blue Cross Blue Shields health insurance and Humana dental insurance, the dental claim first goes to Blue Cross Blue Shields and a portion of it gets paid. Then the remainder of the claim goes to Humana for a yet another payment.

I read that a federal law requires the dental claim to go through the federal employee patient's health insurance (medical insurance) first, anyone understand why this is the case for federal employees - and not anyone else?

We spent two weeks there and it still felt rushed. I think a lot of it is because the beauty of NZ is in its natural scenery, so we went from the North Island to the South Island hiking glaciers and visiting national parks. Auckland itself is not that unique - in my opinion. It is a nice international city but it looks and feels like any major city. Wellington feels more "European" than Auckland, but the cities in NZ are not the highlights - in my opinion. The highlights for me were the mountains, Milford Sound, and the wildlife. ...

Any gift, in my opinion, is to show your appreciation/love to the person receiving the gift. It is the thought that counts, not the dollar amount. If the relationship between you and the gift receiver is purely pecuniary, then give the amount the receiver has given you - or an amount you expect to receive back from the receiver in the future (like a Christmas gift or something).

Re: Pursued the wrong career?

I did the same hiking/traveling when I hit a huge road block in my career. Being in nature and away from work always helps to clear the constantly chattering mind.

Re: Anyone install fake grass?

I have been thinking about this too. Supposedly these new fake grass is good all around - including erosion control. I saw some in a friend's new custom built house. Looks good enough to me, and she has a dog so dog output does not appear to be an issue.

finding transformer in attic with insulation (edited for correct name of component)

Dear fellow handy BHs:

Our house already had blown-in insulation (I think it is what it's called) in the attic when we moved in. Now we are trying to install a Ring-type home monitoring system and cannot locate the junction box transformer with all the insulation around.

Is there an easy way to locate the junction box transformer without removing all the insulation (which means we will have to put the insulation back in after)?

Also is the transformer indispensible for installing the doorbell device?

Your input is appreciated, as always.

Re: Apple Watch Worth The $$$?

With my limited knowledge of what an Apple Watch does, I would say no. Don't need another gadget.

Someone, however, did tell me a story that an Apple Watch caught an irregular heart rhythm which prompted the wearer to check into the hospital for a heart attack. So in this case, the Apple Watch turned out to be a life saving apparatus.

Re: Harrassed at work, what steps to take to protect her future employment

It would really have to depend on the labor law of the state where she resides. For most private employers, employees are "at will" meaning you can be let go even if your review is perfect.
