The Mother of all Breaches

Got an e-mail from Malwarebytes, the Subject title. They say that researchers recently found 26 billion records exposed together online. Not a single breach but a compilation of multiple breaches from various social media sites. They go on to say that I can enter my commonly used e-mail address into their Digital Footprint Portal, which will result in an e-mail report containing the information that they found about me that has been exposed online. I wonder if this is harmless or another type of phishing expedition? I guess that I have always been leery of sending out my phone numbers, e-mail addresses and other PII in a general search just to see what's out there. (Not that the information isn't already out there, but at least "they&q...

Not a Subaru, but my two experiences with new(er) vehicles that had transmissions issues ... Brand spanking new 2020 Acura RDX driven home less than five miles from the dealer and parked in garage while waiting for the PPF guy to show up. A week later when he is applying the PPF I notice fluid spots on the garage floor. I can feel (some low) viscous fluid on the underneath housing. I take pictures and call the dealer. Later, I'm sitting in the service area for about 90 minutes when the service manager and the salesman come out. Not good news. The transmission is toast. They ran every possible test and dumped all the codes. Could not find any fault or malfeasance on my part. Less than 20 miles on the car. We agree to swap with an identical (...

Re: Best cookware to buy

What type of cooktop do you use? Could be important.

I do not recommend All Clad non-stick. Way overpriced for the expected life. I found them to be very soft, extremely sensitive to med-high temperature, as well as utensils (never, ever use metal). I had better luck with Tramontina, but not long lived either. Finally settled on Hexclad. Far, far better experience with my (our) cooking methods.

I can recommend All Clad D5 Stainless (polished). Functional, versatile and looks great too.

Whatever you end up getting, read and follow the care and use instructions.

I wonder if that is state-dependent or specific to the AT&T plan? I discussed Guaranteed Issue Rights with a licensed agent today and was told that because (in my case) the IBM MA PPO plan is considered Employer Group Coverage by Medicare, one can "retreat" during any open enrollment period (reason: leaving Employer Group Coverage).

Did you go through a dental implant and by whom? Your regular dentist, an endodontist, a periodontist, a dental surgeon, or some other dental specialist? I am also wondering who is the best person for dental implants. First implant (No. 18) was dentist -> oral surgeon -> dentist. I was a patient of the dentist for about 5 years prior. The oral surgeon was highly recommended, had great credentials and references. I felt very comfortable. Nothing unexpected, all procedures on time and billed as per treatment plan. Going on 10 years now and (knock, knock) no issues. I did not take the sedation, just a couple of Valium. Second implant (No. 9) has been as they say "A long journey in bad shoes." I am a retired IBMer who signed up for the IBM UHC MA plan we were all encouraged to join for 2023. Thus far, my wife and I have been very satisfied but we're on the fence about 2024. It's our last chance to get back in Medigap without possibly needing to go through underwriting. We're both in our seventies with some extra medical baggage in the last years. We'd also like to be able to travel freely and are uncertain about the coverage with IBM UHC MA We would like to know what experiences other IBM retirees have had with this plan. Most importantly, did anyone decide to go back to Medigap despite the significant cost? Why? I won't be able to help much except to say that I too am on the fence about 2024. Re: Do you "Roomba"? or other robot vacuums? Which is the best?

I have an i8+ for a 2000 sq ft single story home -- carpet (three rooms), tile (two rooms) and LVP (area rugs). Initially mapped the entire house, then sectioned off the rooms (areas) that I wanted to clean on a regular schedule. The i8+ has the self emptying feature, which is nice. Gets a good cleaning periodically. Five screws out and then pop off the top cover to get to the nooks and crannies where fibers, hair, etc. can build up. Purchased online from Costco during one of their 100 (or was it 200?) dollar off specials.

Yes, (prior to Sep) ours typically showed up one - two - maybe three days in advance, always with the Pending status. Then on the 2nd Wednesday, "moved" into our account balance.

The Sep-Oct payments were actually deposited, included in the account balance (ready to be spent) on the first Thursday.

Re: Jersey shore or DE beach town for Empty Nesters??

I had a friend who moved to Rehobeth in retirement from Northern Virginia for the low taxes. His wife has health problems that require them to frequently come back to the DC area to work with specialists. He thinks lack of healthcare access (beyond the basics) is a fact of living out there. Another issue is being dependent on cars. Having to be the driver can get old. As I continue to get closer to middle age, I more and more like areas where it is possible to live well without having to drive everywhere or use Uber/Lyft. These are a couple of reasons why our plan is to move back to a city in the coming years. Jebmke is right. Re: Jersey shore or DE beach town for Empty Nesters??

Just for fun, if you have adults in your company and you’re west of West Virginia ask them which major city Delaware is closest to. Doesn't it depend which part of Delaware? For Dover and north the answer would be Philadelphia, but for the beaches it would be DC I guess? I consider it Philadelphia, and not just because it slightly closer to the beaches than Baltimore or DC. It’s mainly because the Phillies and Eagles are by far the most popular pro teams here. It was even more that way back in the days before the Chesapeake Bay Bridge was built in the 50s, not that I have any recollection of that. Also, without beach traffic being a factor, the trip to Philly is far easier to make than either DC or Baltimore. Two bridges and a lot of water...

I'm assuming you are talking about a stove with a smooth "glass" top. I don't think all GE Profiles have them. I have tried all the method described above except for letting something soak on the stovetop overnight. This may be controversial, but by far the most effective, easy way I have found is to use extra fine sand paper designed to be used wet. I typically use 600 grit. (The larger the number the finer the grit.) I don't use anything courser than 600. Maybe try a small spot that isn't easily seen first to make sure it isn't going to significantly change the finish. On my countertop stove I pulled a knob off and tried the area usually hidden by the knob first. (The knobs on my stove are mounted on the glass surface.) Keep th...

I've had people tell me that they pay more on Medicare than they did prior. Personally, I'm paying about 50% less per month on Medicare when I just look at the premiums -- Medicare Part B, supplemental plan (G), and Part D. Then when I consider what is left to pay after premiums, the Medicare deductible and OOP for drugs (in my case, nothing), that is not even close to my prior plan's OOP max. At the moment, I am way, way ahead. Of course, YMMV. The current arrangement is definitely more costly in terms of premium paid. There was no charge for the employer insuran...

The Trackers by Charles Frazier (Cold Mountain, Varina). An artist gets a WPA commission to paint a mural in a Wyoming post office. While there, he is convinced by his host to search for a missing person, taking him from the ranch to coast to coast. Along the way, the artist describes his experiences in depression-era America. Probably not for everyone; some of the commentary could be uncomfortable.

Another option I have not seen listed here is a group home. In my state a group home can have a limited number of residents -- living in literally a converted single family home -- and the daily care support is usually higher than what you would get in a more conventional care facility, due to a better patient/staff ratio. On the flip side, you obviously get less activities, etc. These places vary but can handle a lot of dementia, though a mobile patient who wants to wander generally won't be a good fit. Be careful with group homes. Of course, YMMV (and by state) but above all, an in-person visit (let me see her/his room) is an absolute must. My experience with two group homes varied wildly. Someone I know bought a Venza hybrid last year (new 2022). They love it. I've ridden in it a couple of times and can see the allure (Lexus-like interior, Toyota reliability, and a hybrid). The owner is looking at this as a 10+ year vehicle. Probably more than you want to spend, though.

Re: please help me get started with TV streaming

Recently went through a cut the cord evaluation. Ended up keeping cable, with modifications, mainly because the combination of live TV and internet was about the same as the alternatives discussed in this thread. In our somewhat rural area, far away from broadcast antennas (and with HOA restrictions), there is no hope for OTA. Modifications included downsizing speed from Gigabit service to 250 Mbps. (With no affect on viewing performance.) Also dropped to a lower tier channel package, and dropped Showtime. Kept HBO, HBO Max, and Peacock. Netflix "included" in package. Monthly went from $246 to $160. Added Hulu with ads for 1.99 a month for one year. Still have Prime. So that's about $170 a month (figure 1/2 of Prime membership goe...

Gee, a neighbor was a retired school teacher (and stay at home spouse). November 1st, they locked up and drove the 5th wheel to AZ, and returned April 1st. While there, sure, they golfed and traveled to Baja for fishing trips and such, but mostly just hung out with people they had met there and became friends with. They were pretty frugal, actually. And far, far away from a multimillionaire.

Re: Where to retire?

Jacksonville Beach, Florida is near Mayo Clinic, no state tax and has golf (but also humidity). There is no perfect (or even near-perfect) place to live or to retire. You have to rank your own priorities than decide how to compromise. - proximity to family and maybe even friends - your familiarity with area (childhood? frequent vacations? previous work location?) - safety - crime, storms, earthquakes, volcanoes - climate - 4 seasons? hot/cold, dry/humid? high desert? mountain? ocean? lake? swamp? - health - air and water pollution, accessible outdoor exercise, good indoor gyms, access to healthcare and emergency care - outdoor activities - golf, hiking, fishing, swimming, boating, flying, driving, biking, etc. - culture - art, film, music,...

Re: Retiree P/T jobs that pay more in benefits?

I'm retired and interested in part time or sporadic work that would be worth more for the benefits than for the actual money. Examples: travel discounts, restaurant and hospitality or hotel discounts, reduced price or free theatre/opera/concert tickets, gasoline reimbursement, and anything along those lines. gift cards lol. Travel discounts: How about an airline (ticketing, baggage) or airport authority? (A friend worked part time at DIA taking people (wheel chair) from the curb to the gate. He got vouchers for air travel.) Restaurant: A couple of people on my street work part time (front of house) at a really nice seafood restaurant. The pay and hours are pretty good and they can get up to 40% off when dining (there or other restaurants i...

I opt NOT to have withholding. All of my (our) withholding (Fed and State) is done against one of our other annuities. I make adjustments to our withholding, if required, once a year. Come April 15, we are usually in the red about $1000 combined, which is just about right.

Re: eSIMs

I completed a T-Mobile trial on my iPhone XS late last year. I kept AT&T on the physical SIM and added an eSIM for the T-Mobile network pass. Worked like a charm; could easily switch between the two. Unfortunately, I found out that the T-Mobile network in my area (at and within a quarter mile of my home) still has poor coverage.

I've gotten to really like HUD (Acura, Audi, BMW). And is rear cross traffic / pedestrian alert so ubiquitous that it is no longer worth mentioning?

Re: Itinerary for South Florida trip in Jan, any suggestions?

Another vote for the Dry Tortugas and an off the beaten path Key West walking tour. Also, second the recommendation for offshore snorkeling, maybe out to Alligator Reef lighthouse? Of course, Everglades NP is amazing; and how about Key Biscayne NP?

For eats, The Fish House in Key Largo gets my vote, and both Lorelei (Islamorada) and the Islamorada Shrimp Shack have good food and awesome sunsets.

The best beach that I found on the Keys was Sombrero Beach on Marathon.

Re: 2019 Acura RDX vs 2019 BMW X3

I would pass on the 2019 (and 2020) model year RDX. As decfdad noted, too many issues for a Honda/Acura. I have a 2020 RDX with the brake, rotor, control arm issues. Not sure that I would go with a 40k+ mileage BMW either, though.

Edited to add: I see now that you've already moved on from those two. Good job!

Re: Costco hearing aid test

At that reimbursement level, why Costco? Why not go to a licensed and trained audiologist? ICBW but I don't think that Costco employees are licensed and trained audiologists.

That said, I went to a Costco recently for a hearing test. They do not charge for the test. They device that I was interested in (Kirkland Signature 10) was recently discontinued and another product was recommended. I have not yet made a decision. (Note that I had the results of recent hearing tests from an audiologist to compare to the results from Costco.)

Re: xfinity internet quality

I've had Xfinity internet (Gigabit service) for about 18 months at my current location. Two outages that I can recall, one short term (hour or less) the other (recently) several hours. Latest speed test to/from my Ethernet connected Mac mini ... 920 Mbps down and 40 Mbps up.
