Re: What is the Correct Mid/Small Cap Allocation Breakdown of VTSAX/VTI?

You can run a comparison among the mid-cap and small-cap indexes that apply to your situation at https://www.etfrc.com/funds/overlap.php . For example, my 401k offers an S&P 500 fund, a S&P MidCap 400 fund, and a...Russell 2000 fund.

:annoyed (WHY CHANGE INDEX PROVIDERS?!?!?!????)

So in my case, I can compare VTI with VOO, SPMD, and VTWO to get how much each overlaps with VTI if I want to replicate total stock market as closely as possible.

Re: Jenny Craig / Nutrisystems / et al

I regularly use Huel products but not for weight loss. The unflavored/unsweetened classic powder makes a good daily lunch that is easy to carry to work and would make calorie tracking very easy if that were my goal. I just put in an order for the "instant meal" (previously "hot & savory") product that is basically a freeze-dried product in a bag that needs to be mixed with boiling water or microwaved for a quick, nutritious meal. Certainly not the cheapest, but perhaps the nutritional aspect might make it suitable in a weight loss context.

Re: Tax-efficiency with only tax-advantaged accounts

I think what you are trying to say is described here, tax adjusted asset allocation. https://www.bogleheads.org/wiki/Tax-adjusted_asset_allocation I think it is a fine way to setup your portfolio. Boom, thank you! Once you adjust for the after-tax value, it does not matter which assets you put in a traditional IRA or 401(k) and which you put in a Roth. If you are in a 25% tax bracket, investing $4,000 in the 401(k) or $3,000 in the Roth in the same investment will give you the same after-tax value. If all else is equal (and it often isn't because of limited 401(k) options), it is slightly better to put assets with higher expected returns in the Roth. If your traditional account has lower than expected returns and you fall into a lower tax ...

Tax-efficiency with only tax-advantaged accounts

In the Bogleheads Wiki page on tax-efficient fund placement, the author writes: If your investments are all in tax-advantaged accounts, fund placement will not have a large impact on your returns. Tax-advantaged accounts include tax-deferred accounts, such as traditional 401(k), 403(b), and Traditional IRA, and the tax-free Roth versions of those accounts such as Roth IRA. I'm trying to wrap my head around this and make sure I'm thinking right. My situation: * All retirement investments are in tax-advantaged accounts: Roth IRA, Roth 401(k) at current employer, husband and wife tax-deferred Thrift Savings Plan accounts (both separated from military). * Bond funds are split about 50/50 between: -- EDV (Vanguard STRIPS) in the Roth IRA -- TSP ...

Keep in mind that you can sign up for WSJ online but you can not cancel subscription online. You will have to call, stay on the phone for 30 minutes until you are connected to someone.
The exception would be California, which mandates the availability of online cancellation. I had an easy time connecting with the WSJ phone rep, and he was polite.

I got the WSJ $4/mo deal at the end of 2021. Called a year later when I knew my trial time was up and told them I wanted to cancel. First offer was $19/mo, which I turned down. They then offered to extend $4/mo for six months and then $19/mo for six months before going up to the full rate. It was very fair, and the person on the phone was polite and professional.

Am I the only one who feels like this portfolio + intermediate treasury is a much smoother ride than being 100% MCW? It looks to me like the risk showed up from 2017-2021, and during that period the portfolio still returned around 8.65% vs 14.71% 60/40 TSM/TISM. As bad as the outperformance was, 8.65% is nothing to scoff at. But from 1999-2016, it returned 11.77% vs 5.23%. And during the lost decade of 99-09, 12.73% vs 2.91%. And now with the big tech crash happening it's -6.21% vs -18.18% since Jan 2022. This portfolio looks a lot more bubble proof than MCW. Just looking at DFA funds, this portfolio looks much smoother no? What makes this portfolio so much more "riskier" than MCW What am I missing? I feel so with my heavily Avan...

Why would they have a fund made up of ten other funds, instead of just creating something like VTWAX/VT with their Avantis "secret sauce" quality/value metric. As I prepare to start buying this in my HSA, the point here is (to my best guess) is upping their AUM for their various funds. Some people will complain that the fund is 70 US / 30 International but that's the efficiency frontier for holding global assets that are not cash or bonds. Is there a way to automate the ETF purchase? I have my HSA on autopilot after it gets deposited from my paycheck, but I'm not using ETFs in there. Only with M1 Finance as your brokerage as far as I'm aware. But I've seen plenty of complaints about them from people who want more control (which i...

In the latest client video Moraif explains that the market rally this week is premature and will not last. https://retirementplannersofamerica.com/email-alert/why-did-the-market-go-up-when-the-fed-raised-interest-rates/ From the transcript: So, the consumer is going to get clobbered, in our view. And if the consumer is clobbered, what happens is they don’t buy stuff, so profits go down, and stock prices fall right with them. So, while this rally sure feels good like, you know, something has changed, we feel that it’s, it might be premature to get excited about this and to start being aggressive in that. There’s an old expression on Wall Street called catching falling knives. You may have heard that. That visual may give you something. And ...

I’ve been in the area for 25 years and have enjoyed the relatively low cost of living. Seconding most of this. Northeast Tarrant County seems ideal for this situation. * Southlake is the very farthest I would want to be with a commute to Irving. West of Southlake, Trophy Club and Westlake are also nice but probably out of driving range. Whether Carroll Independent School District is an issue for you mostly depends on your politics. They like showing up in the national news every three months, it seems. * I’m not a huge fan of Las Colinas. Very “businessey” and doesn...

Fidelity brokerage has a means of buying foreign currency, but I don't know how one would actually withdraw foreign currency from the account without serious complication or just re-converting back to USD and paying for the conversion both times.

Would holding a fund in that currency's government bonds work? There would be a tax consequence, but the exposure would be accomplished with a little interest to boot.

=Index(ImportHtml("http://www.tspfolio.com/tspfunds", "table", 1), 2, 2)
This lets the human(s) at the TSPFolio website pull the prices from the TSP and pass them on to us via their website, heh.
Ah, thank you. I'll just modify mine.

Re: Anyone have any luck with new TSP login?

One thing that's unclear is whether the "no transaction fee" list from Alight's home page is in fact no transaction fee for TSP investors. The list excludes Avantis, DFA, and Vanguard but includes AQR. https://alightfinancialsolutions.com/pd ... pdf?ts=649

Re: Anyone have any luck with new TSP login?

Share prices still haven’t been updated since May 26th.

EDIT: The public page with share prices isn't updated, but there are different share prices when you log in. Farewell to that Google Sheets hack some folks here had worked really hard on for now.

Re: No warning before posting

That warning hasn't been in the software for quite some time and there haven't been any changes. The way it works now - If you hit "Preview" before you post, posts that have been made right before you post will be shown. Hit "Preview" again, and they appear in the area just under the post edit area - where you can view the earlier posts. What if I don't want to preview and I don't hit the "preview" icon? User error? :D Over yonder at the RR forum, you can see if people are working on posts when you're about to post. You can even see who it is so you know if it's going to be worth waiting for them or if you just want to blast. The things modern software can do. 8-) What is the RR forum? What is User error? Can ...

How is that an improvement? Vanguard did the same thing - it's one reason why I moved to Fidelity
I was going to crack a joke about how TSP is even more like Vanguard now. Oh well.

The new interface is so unintuitive, you could potentially get away with setting up the new login without actually seeing the account balance. It took me a few minutes just to find the balances of individual funds.
