I recommend a gas one to get the extra power. As far as buying, I recommend whatever is the current gas powered 3000 psi one at Costco when it is in the coupon book (maybe next month). This is just for the easy ability to return if there is a premature failure after the mfr warranty expires ( you have to empty out the oil and gas before returning). Maybe it's just me, but I've been through a lot of failures over the years of owning many different brands, mainly on the pump side of things, either the pump fails, or the casting cracks somewhere. The one I have now from Costco is going on 7 years with 15-20X use a year, so I'm on a good run with this one (Powerstroke with Subaru engine). Maintenance...I spray pump protector in after each use, ...

I have have a bank account pretty much just for this (EFT payments where the convenience fees > credit card benefit/interest on credit card float). I link my bank account to my investing account, and manage transfers back and forth between the bank account and investing account. My target is to have just $500 of extra cash in the bank account, after outstanding deposits and withdrawals are accounted for. Fraud-wise, I've never had an issue, but if one of these companies I'm using EFT with get's hacked, and my bank account is somehow compromised and emptied, they are not getting much. The bigger benefit with this strategy, is that you don't have much idle cash in a bank account that doesn't pay very much interest (this assuming you are manag...

Re: Confused about 1099-Q and 1098-T
Just bringing up a lesson I learned the hard way, the 1098-T is cash based in the year paid, not academic year based. IE, if you paid in December 2022 for Spring 2023, that payment would show on the tax year 2022 1098-T. I recommend pre planning the cash timing for the 1098-T, 529 withdrawals, and AOTC to ensure everything lines up.
I've observed some private schools have earlier payment deadlines, sometimes it's worth it to take a late payment penalty (or work with their finance dept) to gain favorability in other areas.

I try to plan and accumulate, mentally, 1-1.5% of the current house market value annually for future repairs. This is kept in a contra account in my head. But that doesn't mean I enjoy writing checks for 10's of thousands of dollars. That number might be reasonable for a 200k house in the middle of Missouri but for 1mil+ in a HCOL area (i.e. no a Texas McMansion), definitely too much money to save for house repairs. If you want to do a 200k worth of kitchen and bath reno's in 10 years then yeah. FWIW, the roof on my current house was 20k/1.4mil = 1.4%. Previous house was 14k/500k = 2.8%. Yes - the % has nothing to do with the value of the home being 'sold'. It has to do with the construction and replacement costs for that home in that loca...

No expert, my guess is that the original intent of the Secure Act 1.0 was to continue the annual RMD as it was for non spouse IRAs, with full liquidation required by year 10. But then euphoria of timing RMDs to whenever/whatever you want within 10 years hit the media. Then the "whoops, wait, that's not what we meant" in the legal language, resulting in confusion that's ensued since, and waivers and what not.
So, I wouldn't say it's clear, but I would say it's a mess. Who knows when it will be sorted.

I have no idea how to report on Schedule D (IE, in what column or letter code adjustment), or if the broker mis reported something, how to correct. If you bought it on the secondary market, there's accrued interest paid you'd have to account for as well. I think the gain/loss will be short term and taxed at the sa...

For me, Schwab seems to do very well with derivatives tax reporting. It sounds like you are just dealing with transition issues. A CPA should be able to work through broker provided tax statement errors, and be able to easily document with supporting working papers/schedules to make any adjustments needed. I don't think equity options contracts should be under sec 1276. Personally, I wouldn't bother trying to have the broker fix it, it may make it worse. I would wait to file, maybe file an extension, in case revised tax forms are issued (that is, unless you like to file 1040X returns). Under very, very few circumstances would I carry an adult college graduate on my own auto insurance. Old thread, I know, but I did transfer ownership of the cars to my college senior daughter, but our insurance policy has me as primary and she and rest of family as other insured. My understanding is that liability follows car ownership, not the insurance policy.... I suggest asking your insurance agent if that arrangement is acceptable. I did this, trans...

It takes some effort, but what I do is plan what my taxes will be at year end at the beginning of the year. This involves: 1. A spreadsheet tab with a row for each anticipated paycheck (reg pay, raise, and bonus), and a column for every item on the paycheck stub/detail, which I use to get to the federally taxable wage for the year, and how much is withheld 2. A spreadsheet tab for all income streams (interest, dividends, antcipated sales...etc) 3. A spreadsheet tab computing the pro forma tax return using 1. and 2. and the other income and credits (RMD, IRA...etc). With the tax bracket logic I compute my expected tax, and I try to account for any phase out/cliff things like the AOTC with this logic using formulas. I use last year's return t...

Re: Invest cash when interest goes down
Personally, I've been following the barbell approach for the emergency fund invested in treasuries (no state tax). I got the idea from my broker's fixed income presentations, which basically make a point if you're heavy in MM/short term, you are at risk if interest rates drop. So this is what I'm doing:
50% 1 year treasuries
50% 5 year treasuries
Not really optimized if interest rates rise (not really concerned about this if it happens), but reasonably liquidity for emergency fund needs with some mid term income protection for a stagnant/lowering interest rate environment.

Some dealers will take a personal check. I've never had a problem buying a new car with a personal check. If you have Schwab checking and the dealer will accept a personal check, I would do that over a wire. If the personal check isn't an option, wiring, to me seems the most direct and easy. Wiring money, assuming you have a settled/cleared cash balance, is very easy to set up on the web site (triple check the numbers, make sure it's a wire). If you set up a wire in the morning, Schwab clears by 2-3pm EST in the afternoon. Occasionally, as a fraud/safety measure, I have had Schwab call to confirm a wire, and Schwab will cancel the wire if you don't verbally confirm (I've had this happen), so have your contact phone available and be sure to ...

I'll add, renting, along with not dealing directly with property tax, insurance, maintenance, and replacement of things that are expensive (roof, HVAC, deck...etc), you're also not tempted into doing things like upgrading the kitchen and master bath.
So I think there's a case that renting, under certain scenarios, optimizes wealth and allows for more flexibility.

Mainly, just to keep the threat footprint small at home, and, more of a concern for me, while travelling. The other Terrabytes of stuff I have that I care about that I might need time to time, is encrypted and backed up in the cloud. It's accessible, but not immediately available on a whim. It's a tradeoff, you may want to assess too if it fits your use case. There is no right answer, only your comfort level.
Personally, at that net worth, $1.8K/year seems kind of immaterial to protect your asset position against an extreme rainy day occurrence. Yes, you probably won't ever use it, but maybe you'll sleep better not thinking about being underinsured, perhaps, that's how I see it.
If you have kids on your policy, a boat, a business, all the more reason.

If you have other adjustments, like ABP, Turbotax will print a supporting schedule with the details that match the summary of the below the line schedule B adjustments. Normally, with acquisitions, it's best to be on the buying side, not the selling side.
That's not to say it won't work out, but I'd be sharpening the resume and have a plan B. If staying, the best advice I can give is to keep your head down low during the transition period.

I used to think using a calculator over a slide rule was cheating.

Re: Best Value Portable GPS Navigator
I still have my 15 year old Garmins with lifetime map updates, I haven't used them in at least 8 years. I don't use the car nav either in our cars.
Google maps and Waze are so much better and have great voice integration. Things like showing gas station prices on the maps, restaurants en route, traffic delay re-routing, speed trap notification...etc, all way better than a dedicated GPS, IMHO.

Re: Inherited IRA account requirement?
I've had this, they split the IRA to each of the beneficiaries, gave us each our own access, then we could have another custodian transfer. Wasn't a big deal, IMHO, I moved a month or two later. I think they did it this way to cleanly divide the assets on a specific date, and deal with any odd lot sale and post income residuals. Anyways, sounds like a big mess if they didn't do it this way.
Note I mentioned to have the company you want it to end up initiate a transfer (as custodian on your behalf, custodian to custodian transfer), I think this minimizes the risk of it being mis-classified as a taxable distribution.

Re: DC Mall - where to stay for AirBnB
It's farther than what you probably want, but the Dunn Loring Marriott Courtyard is a block or so from the Dunn Loring metro station, maybe it's an hour ride to the mall from what I remember. We've stayed there, I don't stay and airbnbs/VRBOs anymore.
Closer, and what might work for you, North Rosslyn probably has a lot of short term rental offerings, it's closer, and you can walk to Georgetown over the Key bridge.

Re: Taxation of Treasury bills, notes and bonds
OK, just confirming, bought 2 treasury notes on the secondary market that matured this year, Schwab auto import to TT, somehow I think it was done right. Treasury Note A: $800 accrued market discount gain adj and transferred to Schedule B (de minimis does not apply, $800 was more than .25% face value of note purchase) Treasury Note B: $200 accrued market discount left as long term gain (de minimis applied, $200 was less than .25% face value of note purchase) Both of these amounts are taxable for state, correct? Or which states that charge income tax would they not be taxed? In perusing IRS Pub 550, the de minimis exception is only mentioned with respect to OID, not to market discount. Can you share anything from an IRS pub or the actual re...

Edit: I actually have no idea why these were reported differently
