Re: Question on mortgage additional payments strategy
If I make a payment towards principal then the loan time will be reduced. Let's say I have a long mortgage, the question I have is - which strategy is better: 1)Put $100 extra each month for 5 years 2)Buy stable value investments in a ladder manner (CDs, Treasuries) each month and then put the whole saved amount + accumulated interest at the end of 5th year towards principle ? What does "5 years" have to do with it? What is your mortgage rate? What return would you expect to get from your CDs and Treasuries in the coming 5 years? Are these the only two choices for you? (its likely I would recommend neither, if that were an option) Nothing, we can use other timeframe < 30 yrs. It’s a theoretical q 2.5% 1% Yup, only these 2 options

Re: what’s a realistic salary for an IT specialist?
It doesn't sound like you are looking for IT specialist jobs, but rather data engineering jobs. Where would you want to live and how much effort would you put into studying? If you could crack any of the top companies you would earn far more in the US. It might not be worth the move to work in non-tech F500 companies, though. Anywhere from $100k-500k is realistic depending on where you live and how skilled you are. That is correct. The ideal position would be an opportunity to design and implement a data science / engineering platform for a non tech company or startup. Or a position in a hardcore engineering tech company, which implies working with people that are both smarter and more experienced at data engineering. Location would be sec...

We're considering buying another house (<400k) for winter months (1200 miles away) so the plan is to have 7/5 ratio (less likely 8/4).
What's the $ overhead? Is it a good idea to rent one out while living in another one? Any other issues?

Last year, I had a few great accomplishments that changed the way things were done, and I was in positive media stories a few times. I received my performance review, and all of my information mimicked the examples on the review form. In the categories like "dedication", my boss wrote basically what was in the example paragraph, like "He shows up to work on time every day, uniform looks good, blah blah...". I asked my supervisor about the major accomplishments I had and if he wanted to put them in there (I've used performance reviews in job interviews in the past and they helped). He said, "Well, those were mostly a team effort. Everyone pitches in." That wasn't true. One of my lazy coworkers told me he also g...

I have been in engineering and engineering management for nearly 20 years. Performance reviews are just theatre. The decisions have already been made and in most cases they are made without any thought to your performance. This has been my experience: -The company decides on a company wide pay increase, say 3%. -Department heads get all their reports salaries added up and multiplied times 0.03. -This is the amount of $ that can be used to give raises -If someone in the department is not pulling their weight, they might get less -If someone in the department has a lower salary than the rest, they get a bigger raise -If someone in the department has a higher salary, they get a smaller raise -Maybe, just maybe, if someone is a stellar perform...

Hello! What are the risks of not reviewing my VG account for an entire year? Over the past decade or so I’ve become inherently obsessed with checking my account balances. Daily reviews of progress, gains, losses, and everything in between is commonplace. Most of the time, no action can be taken with this data other than the occasional rebalance or celebration of reaching a new milestone. While drafting my 2021 goals, I recalled an interview with Mr. Bogle where he suggested an investor to never look at their account balance for fear of emotion-based decisions. This sparked a thought for me to not review my Vanguard account for all of 2021. Are there any inherent risks involved with this goal? I have enough emergency funds outside of Vangua...

You also need a fair amount of room to store lump charcoal. In addition to the temp controllers (generally useful for temps lower than 350F) you will no doubt buy many accessories which can easily double to cost of the original device. And you need space to store them.

WHAT YOU DON'T GET IS THESE JOBS ARE NOT PLENTIFUL. They are plentiful enough that anyone who is willing to put in the effort to study for a few months has a good shot one. You can say that for ANY industry. If you are willing to put in the effort, most people are capable of getting to the top of whatever field they choose, which generally results in higher compensation than the median. The ceiling may not be as high as in tech right now, but that doesn't really change anything. Not at all true. I work in corporate finance. If I “studied for a few months” would I have entree into jobs that pay 2-3x the median? Not a chance. SW engineering is unique in this regard. These smokers are quite heavy, giving it a superior heat control. The newish Yoder controller has wifi capabilities to connect to your phone. However, these might be $$$ instead of $$. They are also somewhat hard to find - you can have one shipped from their factory.

New smoker recommendation?
I currently have a Weber grill which is great if I need some quick cook but while visiting my friend I sampled bbq pork shoulder from his $150 electric smoker and it was delicious.
He said that he is looking for a more advanced model in <$500 range but at the same time he is dreaming about Big Green Egg.
I googled about both BGG and Komodo Joe - it looks amazing but looks like maintaining temperature there is a significant effort.
I'd definitely like some smoker that I can 'set and forget' but avoid 'dancing' around it trying to keep the desired temp.
Any suggestions?
Edit - I'm open for a bigger than $500 budget

It's the only Apple product I returned in a week - still do jogging with my iphone with wired earphones

Re: Marketers think I'm elderly. I'm not.
BTW is anybody else getting tons of political ad in the mail? Cannot recall a single piece of paper in 2016 but last few months I've been grabbing 20-30 of this crap weekly! They keep talking about going green and climate change but bombard me with hard copies of some nonsense Not even sure that such papers are recyclable

Re: Marketers think I'm elderly. I'm not.
About 10 years ago, I started getting bulk mailings from mortuaries asking me to return a card for a chance to win a free cremation. For about the last five years, I've been getting more mail announcing that I'm turning 65 and should sign up for their medicare supplement plan or hearing aids. At this point, I probably get 2-4 of these every week. I'm 39 years old. I check my credit reports yearly, so I'm pretty sure this is not a fraud issue and just a marketing algorithm gone wild. Has anyone had similar experiences? I'm wondering whether having larger IRA/401k balances (~600k total, 50k-250k each individual account), paying off my mortgage, or other 'uncommon' things for someone my age is getting me classified as much older than I am in ...

Re: Ring for a new girlfriend
From all the brands mentioned here I heard about tiffany and cartier before. I checked all the links and WOW - most of the rings from tiffany looks like from another planet in comparison with others. Rare example when the brand matters :sharebeer Wait...are you still looking for a ring?! No I changed my mind in favor of apple watch of course  sounds like you are being sarcastic, but a ring is the ABSOLUTE LAST thing you should get her unless you are proposing. Apple watch sounds like a GREAT gift, but again sounds like you are being sarcastic, which is odd because you are 100% wrong.... Your cultural and/or generational bias is showing! As is that of many other posters here. Who says that a ring is loaded with meaning and e...

Conversely, who says that a similarly expensive necklace or bracelet wouldn’t be interpreted in the same way? Do you know the OP personally or the girlfriend? OP came here to ask for ring recommendati...

Re: Ring for a new girlfriend
$1000 won't get much from Tiffany. Suggest Blue Nile or Brilliant Earth, or a local non chain jeweler runner540: Your post reminds me of a similar time shortly after being drafted for WWII in 1941. I wanted to buy my girlfriend a ring. I knew that an emerald represented her birthday. I was in New York and looking in the store windows in Times-Square for green emerald rings. There were lots of them at a low price I could afford. I had heard about TIffany so I went to 5th avenue and visited their store. I asked the well-dressed salesman to see their emerald rings. I was in my new Army uniform. The salesman looked at me and asked how much I could afford to pay? I remember saying, "up to $50." Instead of laughing,* the salesman told ...

Yeah I checked the websites mentioned here... Tiffanies is more expensive but way more stylish. A lot of options to consider <$2000 - I feel ok to bump the budget based on what I sawEnjoyIt wrote: ↑Fri Sep 18, 2020 3:24 pmCan’t go wrong with overpaying for anything from tiffanies.Pomegranate wrote: ↑Fri Sep 18, 2020 3:22 pm I started to date a new girlfriend (mid 30s) in the beginning of the year. Looking to buy her a nice looking ring (it's not for engagement/wedding) but I have 0 clue what brands are popular now. Do people shop online for such stuff nowadays? Budget wise $1000-1500 I guess
