Re: HELP! Made error with backdoor roth coversion steps in turbotax
I haven't read all the posts, but if your new 1040 ended up with the exact same numbers as the original 1040, then you don't need to amend. Just send in a Form 8606 for each of you with your signature on the back. Keep a copy with your tax return. Thanks for your reply. Total tax owed is same but o...

Re: HELP! Made error with backdoor roth coversion steps in turbotax
Yes, it does say rollover. [ . . .] Anyways, what is the recourse? Does amending it and doing it right way will fix my problems? Ah, good, mystery solved. Sorry, I don't know about the amendment. My instinct would be, yes, you need to amend, so that the Form 5498 that your IRA custodian sends to th...

Re: HELP! Made error with backdoor roth coversion steps in turbotax
Another thought: Did Turbotax print the word "ROLLOVER" in the vicinity of Form 1040 line 4b? There is a question when entering the Code 2 1099-R where people sometimes get confused on the difference between a rollover and a conversion and tell Turbotax the wrong thing. Telling it "r...

Re: HELP! Made error with backdoor roth coversion steps in turbotax
All the above checks out as if you had correctly entered the 2x$6000 non-deductible contributions into Turbotax and as if there were Forms 8606 there and used for your calculations. The good news is that your actual tax calculations appear correct, given the 1099-Rs you describe. The potentially ba...

Regarding your point 2, it says " Good News: You dont owe extra tax on this money. Based on your entry in box 7 in 1099R you dont need to pay any extra tax on this money taken out of the acocunt", just like how it shows on the thefinancebuff webpage. I went and looked at thefinancebuff pa...

Re: Made error with backdoor roth coversion steps in turbotax
From what I understand, since the state doesn't need 8606. I checked all the forms from last year and they all seem to be there this year. So I am hoping I don't unless someone thinks I am wrong. If you flubbed up reporting of the backdoor Roth process, then the symptom will be that line 4b ("...

Re: Made error with backdoor roth coversion steps in turbotax
I just filed my 2020 taxes earlier today [. . .] then I realized [. . .] form 8606 was not generated. But I don't think I paid extra taxes since I remember turbotax telling me I didn't have to pay tax. Re: Made error with backdoor roth coversion steps in turbotax
It appears you paid taxes on an extra $6,000 (or $7,000) that you didn’t need to. Since the tax liability will change, fixing it will require an amended return be mailed in. While you are it, dig through every line of the return to look for additional errors so you only have to amend one time. To g...

Yes, I made non deductible contribution to tIRA and then coverted it to rothIRA. And yes i got the 1099R and i entered it right in turbotax. Only suggestion would be to use total market fund if available. Yes, we do have one available: Money Market Fund . There is also a Stable Value Fund available. If you are both covered by a Family plan the whole year then you can split up the $7200 any way you'd like. So she could contribute $3600 to her HSA on Jan 2 under that scenario. In addition to medical expenses, you can use the HSA to pay for Medicare premiums, so yes it can absolutely be considered part of retirement savings. I just went through this transition. If you go Google voice route, I would not forwards texts and calls to your cell phone number. That would defeat the purpose.
