Would you mind expanding on that? It’s too early and I’m too dumb to fully understand it, but would like to. Thanks in advance.

We have no state income tax but they make up for it with property taxes levied by county, city, school and hospital districts. There are also sales, gasoline, vehicle taxes, etc.
Public transportation is nonexistent.
But BBQ and Tex-Mex are to die for.

Re: Question for Texans
I always hear Texas is "cheap", but the home prices and property taxes are much higher. Besides property taxes, what other cost "pitfalls" should I be made aware of in Texas? Many people have been moving to Texas in recent years, so that has had an effect on the price of houses. You would need to compare it to where you currently live. Not having a state income tax is an advantage, and it also doesn't have estate or inheritance taxes. Many areas are serviced by rural electric cooperatives (REC's), which generally have pretty reasonable electric rates. I've been generally pleased with the cost of groceries in my area (H-E-B). There are some nice state parks in the Weatherford area; (Lake Mineral Wells State Park and Trai...

Question for Texans
I am considering a job opportunity that is located about 30 minutes west of Fort Worth (Weatherford area). I currently live in a LCOL of location, where there is state income tax and the sales tax on goods are comparable to Texas. I live very comfortable now, but have a desire to expand my career and move into leadership. I do worry that at the end of the day, even an increase in pay me equal out to "lower" quality of life moving. I always hear Texas is "cheap", but the home prices and property taxes are much higher. Besides property taxes, what other cost "pitfalls" should I be made aware of in Texas?

This is a tough one but I think it’s one of those situations where any decision you make will be the right one. I think across the board, people are just not as outgoing/friendly anymore. It seemed like before social media, people were more open to being around people that didn’t 100% agree with them on things and there was a stronger desire to be social.

I have small kids and also drive “old” cars. I consider myself an ok parent, and strive to always think about my kids safety. People talk about older cars as if they are laced with combustibles. There are old cars that have fabulous safety ratings and newer cars that don’t. One of my friends once told me he uses “for the kids safety” as a way to talk his spouse into letting him get a new car.

We were there last year and visited Magic Kingdom, Animal Kingdom, Hollywood Studios, Universal and Legoland (my son was a Make a Wish recipient). It was our first time visiting the parks, and we were there for 5 days. Our kids ages were 5 and 8. Here are my opinions: - 4 days is enough for 3 parks. Give yourself a break or going to a park will feel like a chore - Legoland is going to feel like a big disappointment when you go from Universal to Disneyworld, but my kids loved it - We did not love Magic Kingdom, but if you are a "Disney" family, love nostalgia and/or have a kid who loves princes stuff- they will love it - We kept hearing EPCOT is more for adults - Harry Potter Diagon Alley was better than Star Wars world, in our opi...

Re: Considering a job change, but will reqiure a pay cut
Sadly, the 120k is even a stretch. The current posting information is actually less than that. I am making a couple of assumptions, and one is they can bring me in at a higher level (senior) and the pay range increases with that. I am by no means saying I am a shoe-in, but I left on good terms and have a lot to offer them in our niche industry.PowderDay9 wrote: ↑Tue Aug 08, 2023 6:24 pm I'm assuming you can't negotiate to at least your current pay. Considering a job change, but will require a pay cut
I am considering a job change, but it will come with a 10k pay cut + about a 9k a year bonus (post tax); tough pill to swallow. I currently work for a very employee friendly company that is working toward an expansion that will probably require additional travel and longer hours for the next 2-3 years. I have no complaints about the company, but the work has never truly been a good fit for me. I am looking into an opportunity with a company I worked for years ago and always enjoyed the work and focus. I left because I was interested in working for a different side of the business, that just did not fit me. The good news is both companies have fully funded pension plans, and the one with the pay cut actually has a better benefit. Current Fin...

30 Day Notice [Switching Employer]
I am applying for a job that will require my family to movie. While I’m not sure if I’ll get an offer, I do want to be prepared. Is giving the new employer a 30 day start date considered too long? If they met that date, should I tell current employer right away or provide the regular 2 week notice? I should probably add in some context on why exactly I need a good strategy with the notice: - my annual bonus at my current job comes in March. It is based on last years performance. I feel like a jerk for giving notice right after the bonus, since the company has been nothing but good to me. -my son is two years cancer free, and his scheduled scan is coming up in March. While I am very positive on the outcome, I really don’t want to give my cur...

Mississippi Bogleheads
Greetings,
I came across a job opportunity in Hattiesburg,MS that fits my skill set quite well. If offered the job, I would essentially be skipping a couple “rungs” of the corporate ladder, not to mention the position sounds very rewarding. I currently live in a southern state that borders Mississippi so it wouldn’t be that big of a culture shock. I worry more about what opportunities my wife and children will have. Are even good schools in Mississippi that bad? Is the state, or even the area of Hattiesburg improving? What good questions am I NOT asking?

My opinion is probably out of date - but there was indeed a Disney for Adults and older teens. Not sure what your "group" will consist of (kids, tweens, teens, adults) - but believe me there is stuff at Disney for everyone and it isn't all cheesy low budget stuff. Our group would be 4 adults - no kids. (A single neighbor without kids has extended family that goes to Disney and invited her once. She hated it because it was all about the kids and she thought they all got exhausted very quickly but the parents insisted they all had to keep marching on. She said she would like to go back to Disney but by herself or with adults who were okay about taking breaks.) Recent Disney trip goer here, and here are my opinions: - if I didn’t ha...

Re: What are your LEAST favorite vacation destinations
I did Disney for the first time with young kids a couple months ago and enjoyed it but it's a once-every-five-years type of thing IMHO. Yes, the pricing is exorbitant, the rides aren't THAT great, and food can be mediocre (Magic Kindgom in particular). BUT, the storytelling is magnificent, the shows can be great (Fantasmic at Hollywood Studios at the end of the night was fabulous), and you live vicariously through your kid's joy. If you're a Star Wars fan, the landscape of Galaxy's Edge truly transforms you to another place. If you have a child who is a fan of other Disney characters, their eyes just light up (although I refused to wait in a line to meet a "princess" -- parades only!). Going a more "random weekend" when...

Showing your children how to give, and give cheerfully, is a great goal. I think if you can put a face to the donation it always helps. Another lesson learned about giving and serving on a more personable level is that sometimes the individual receiving it is not as thankful as we would like. Showing your kids how you work through that disappointment and how we give to help others and a part of doing that is accepting their response is out of our control.

One has to wonder just how much time in corporate America is spent on doing nothing or trying to find something to do. I would say 60%, maybe higher. I have to wonder if it has always been like this, or has automation really made white collar work a slog. A part of me thinks it has always been this way, I mean if martini lunches were a real thing, I doubt anyone who was sloshed was getting any real work done.

Re: Minimal work at job - Keep at it or actively look for new job?
It's not always about hours worked. Some people need meaningful work to feel fulfilled - others are okay coasting in a job without achievements. If you are the former you should seek new employment. This is the best response. Some folks need to find meaning in their careers, while others see their careers as just one piece of their life - no right answer, just a personality trait. I am in the same boat as the OP and would probably take a 10k loss to just have some work with meaning, and one that provided me a steady state of things to do. I think we are in agreement. But I just want to point out that folks can desire meaning in their career while also understanding that their careers are just one piece of their life - it doesn't have to be...

Re: Probate predicament
I would like to add that being an executor or trustee for someone else is a great learning experience. By the time you are done, you will see your own estate differently. Just don’t be afraid to have a lawyer help you. Your uncle was wise to be using one. If you know who he was using, that would be my first choice since he already knows the background of this case. P.S. Another thing I would do is to check the county recorder’s website where the house is located to be sure those cousins haven’t changed the deed to themselves as owners. So the lawyer who was representing my grandmother, uncle and father literally walked away from the case since there was so much drama and confusion. We have checked the records, it is still in my grandmother...

The entire situation is exactly why lawyers even exist. My mom and dad were separated for 10 years before his death, I’m sure my uncles family would rather set it on fire before giving it to her. My brothers and I have hired a lawyer who told us that if the court chooses one of my uncles children to be executor, unless they have a bankruptcy or felon, it might be impossible for them to be removed as executor. One of this kids has a criminal record, the other one is just an odd duck but clean record.

Re: Probate predicament
I’m so sorry to hear of your loss of several relatives so close together and that some of the living lack integrity. In what order did the three people die? The way to think of these estates is that the first to die has their estate settled first, even if one of their heirs died before receiving their full share. Thus, if your grandmother died first, your father and uncle (if they are sons of your grandmother) are likely heirs. But if your dad died first, he likely didn’t inherit anything from your grandmother, unless grandmother’s will/ trust took into account one of her children dying before her. It sounds like you might be a good candidate to finish settling grandmother’s estate. See an estate lawyer who can assist you. My grandmother p...

Thank you for this, it helps. It’s a tough situation, and I fear the other side of the family would trash the house just out of spite (even though they ruining their share as well). The house is probably worth a decent chunk of money 275k-325k.stan1 wrote: ↑Sun Oct 23, 2022 7:21 pm Decide if it is worth it for you and your brother to hire a lawyer and then do so, or let it go. If you want to fix up the house and try to sell it at a premium that's not what you get with a court ordered sale.

Probate predicament
My grandmother, father and uncle all passed away within the same year. My grandmothers home is currently the only inheritance that is left for the 5 grand children to split. The issue is at this time there is no executor, nor is my father’s brothers kids talking to us. This situation is sad and difficult because I say this with all respect, my cousins are people who have criminal records and/or are not in the right mind to make sound decisions. We recently learned my cousin has moved into the house without asking anyone, and my brother who is in law enforcement has told us it will be impossible to kick them out. Any thoughts?

In my observation, the Anti-Work movement is actually happening within the work place, not outside of it. It seems be across the board that people want jobs, but have no desire to excel at them. That being said, we have hired some employees that are straight out of college and they all seem to be impressive individuals who really want to learn and work. Managers out there, what are you seeing?

Here is some extra context: This kid is 18 and about to start a small technical school, he lives literally 20 steps from my house. I went over all the stuff today, and I looked down and only 5 minutes have passed. I am considering just leaving the pool pump running, which would cut his trip down to just once a day. If I did that would my status move from cheap....well you know.....to just a tight fisted individual? My dog is an old outside dog, yes those still exist. She is happy sleeping and meandering through the yard, a walk would probably be torture for her old bones.

Re: Married Men with Children Who Are High Earners
Every family is different, and most people I know have no interest in staying at home no matter the income. In my humble opinion, my house was at its best when my spouse stayed home, but she did not care for it. It’s a huge sacrifice that I don’t think is talked about in a good enough light in today’s world. That being said, a miserable stay at home spouse is bad for EVERYONE.

Re: Volunteering opportunities
Call a decent sized church in your area and talk with them about local needs in the community. You don’t have to be a member or even religious, they will just be glad someone is willing to help.

Funds from a sale of home dilemma
Greetings Bogleheads, Well let me start off by saying our family decided to “live a little” and upgrade our home. We walked away from a 10 year, cheap mortgage to a 30 year tad bit higher mortgage (3.5 to 5.3 mortgage to boot). No, I am not offended if you are shaking your head. We put 20% down and had planned to recast the mortgage once the sell of our prior home was complete. The funds are now in our bank and I can’t help but want to hold onto them during these wild times. My wife and I both have stable jobs, and have no debt outside of the mortgage. The one dark cloud that follows us is that we have a child with a very complicated medical history, but all well at this moment. I would say the extra lying around is about 75k. Thoughts? Ext...

Re: Downsizing life: Family of 4 moving into tiny house
I laugh every time young childless couple buy tiny homes. After staring at all four walls, going outside and then bumping into each other all day, other “activities” will take place.London wrote: ↑Tue May 31, 2022 7:07 am This isn’t a financial decision, in my view. You can certainly make it work.
A few things stood out to me as I read the post.
With kids that age, I’m not sure how you’d have any feel for college.
Whenever I think of a tiny house with kids, I always wonder how the parents ever take part in “night time” activities.
Other than that, do whatever feels right.
To the OP, go for it, why not.

Re: Anyone a Realtor? Would you recommend it?
Take this for what it is worth, but my brother and a close friend both did real estate on the side and said the exact same thing:
- It is a dog eat dog business, "nice" people are probably not successful in it
- Be prepared for people to waste your time
- if you are doing it as a side hustle, not worth it
Both my friend and brother quit doing it, they said it drained them.

Re: High Earners - What's Your Profession?
Senior Analyst for a very specialized piece of the electric grid, I make a little over 100k in a VLCOL part of the United States.
I have a friend who sales emergency vehicles and claims to make well over 300k a year, he also repeats that a lot so I tend to not believe him. I have learned most of my friends who are in sales make a killing for what seems to be a pretty manageable job (not easy by any means).

Wall-E, or even the new Chip and Dale movie (it is very funny). I am against the Incredibles only because it is so long.
