Re: Vanguard cost basis problems

All of this is very troubling since Vanguard has my life savings too.

I had a similar experience buying VTIAX before Christmas. It showed up as having a cost basis of about 6000 less than the price I purchased it. As a result, there was 6000 or so gain that wasn't real. They fixed it once I pointed it out, but how does this happen?

This does not inspire confidence in Vanguard!!

Welcome and congratulations on finding us. The above advice is good.

If I were you, I would probably just use a simple, broadly diversified index fund for everything. I wouldnt use bonds at all at your age. I would probably skip international.

I don't like this FNGU. It is iike placing a bet in a casino. FXAIX is S & P 500 index with low cost and would be fine.

Good luck to you.

Re: Tax managed funds in taxable account, Fixed income portion

My largest single holding is VTCLX. I started buying it when it first became available. It has done what it was supposed to do. When it was first offered, dividends were taxed differently and it made more sense. Now, the difference in performance from Total Stock Market is very little. And, you can exchange TSM mutual fund for ETFs and move to different brokers more easily. I now buy TSM for new purchases instead of VTCLX. I have large embedded long term gains in VTCLX so I wont be selling anytime soon. If I were starting out, I would just go with Total Stock Market. Best wishes.

I would use Vanguard Total Stock Market Fund for all of it-either ETF or mutual fund. If you want to get fancy, Tax Managed Capital Appreciation Fund pays less dividends, but I would not bother. The difference is very small. I would set it up so it reinvest dividends. That way you dont have to do anything with it except pay taxes on it. Good luck with this.

Self insuring by default. I applied for LTCI when I was 58 and was turned down. I was surprised because I am actually in quite good health. It turned out for the best though. Shortly after, the company stopped writing LTCI policies to consumers and has had significant rate increases. Meanwhile my portfolio has grown and I am still quite healthy. They did me a favor by rejecting me.

My gift to my adult siblings has been fudge from the Monks of Gethsemene in Kentucky. One of my siblings lives in the Pacific Northwest and annually gives us smoked salmon. Another gives us peppermint bark candy from Williams Sonoma. Each of these is looked forward to every year. The salmon is very popular for Christmas Eve gatherings. I am also a coin collector and I give my adult children and grandchild a 1 oz silver coin each year. These used to always be American Silver Eagles, but last year was Australian and this year will be UK's silver 1 oz coin. Happy Holidays!

Re: Email from Vanguard regarding switching account type.

I switched about a year ago.

I had an unusual situation that I hadn't foreseen. I had 2 separate taxable mutual fund accounts for the same Vanguard equity fund. Shares in each of these had different average cost bases. Both accounts contained older, "noncovered" shares. When the accounts were changed over to the new platform, the accounts were merged and the shares were given a new (averaged) average cost basis. It could not be undone. Now I can track these myself, but Vanguard can't anymore. If I had anticipated this, I would have transfered one of these 2 accounts to another brokerage to keep them separate.

Otherwise, for me, switching was fine. My 1099 arrived much earlier this year than in previous years.

First, I want to thank the scores of Bogleheads who responded to this thread. The responses have been creative, helpful and informative and will help my daughter respond to this problem in new and different ways. My following questions are for those who have either negotiated with hospital corporation billing departments or otherwise have experience in billing negotiations. Unfortunately, my daughter and I do no have much experience with negotiations of this kind: 1) Is it best for my daughter [uninsured, without assets and living in the UK] to start negotiations when the first bill is received or - to hold off initiating negotiations- to until after three billing cycles [90 days] have passed? 2) In the event that the hospital corporation ...

Re: Daughter visiting from UK hit with Uninsured Hospitalization for $62K: Any suggestions to negotiate bills down?

This is how I would handle this: I would let my daughter do all the negotiations. I would not directly involve myself. That way if the hospital never becomes reasonable, you are not on the hook. I would pay a reasonable amount and I would do it for her. I would pay a deeply discounted amount that would be in line with what managed care payers pay for these services. 20% of 60,000 is 12 000 and that is probably somewhere in the ballpark. It is probably significantly more than the hospital gets from medicaid or medicare for patients with similar treatment. This really needs months to "ripen". It needs to get high enough in the hospital company bureaucracy that someone will have the authority to make a deal so don't be in a hurry. An...

Re: How much $$ do you actually need per month

I would suggest you start to track your monthly expenses. It is very helpful for projections and easy to do. All of my money passes through my checking account. My pay is automatically deposited. Any other checks are deposited. All expenses come from that same account. At the end of each month, I figure out how much I spent. Easy calculation. 10 or 15 mins per month. For me, I found that it was pretty consistent from month to month. I am a free a spender too. I dont budget. I dont track categories, but I do track the total amount I spent each month. From that, I have a pretty good idea of how much I will need when I retire. If you do it for a year, you will too. Best wishes.

Re: has dentistry changed, or is new dentist just a money grubber?

I would find a new dentist. My experience is that they vary quite a bit. I have had bad experiences with corprate dental practices as well as provate solo dentists. Near the end of the year, the corporate place would check to see how much benefit remained on my dental insurance and try to figure out a procedure to get every penny. This usually resulted in significant out of pocket expenses for me. It took years for me to find someone I trust. Keep looking.
