Google Subaru idle fluctuations if you haven't and see the variety of questions over the years/decades. Could be vacuum, could be the ECU is in need of a reset or it could be what the dealers say - it's normal.

I've also been doing it for a long, long time.

For fun, get a pack or two of giant/monster/jumbo sunflower seeds that will grow 9' or 10' tall with seed heads the size of dinner plates. I grow them closer to the house so I can water them if need be and stake them when they get top heavy.
