Re: Flooring

Thanks so much for all the insightful comments. Some context: We are rebuilding the home after a fire that basically took out the whole home. Therefore the entire subfloor is being replaced all over the house. Is there something that I should tell the contractor to do or not to do wrt the engineere...

Duct leakage can be tested - at least you'll know what the current status is of your ducts. Google "duct blaster"....

Re: How to remove smoke smell from clothes after a fire?

I have friends whose house was extremely smoke damaged in the California wildfires. They sent all fabric items to a specialized cleaning service, but the service could not get the smoke smell out of many of them. I would send a sample of items to a service and see how they do. If you are satisfied ...

Re: HVAC return vent location

I have a similar problem, although I have a single story house. I'm still trying to figure out a solution. I'm looking into installing "jumper ducts", but I don't think that would be possible for the first floor on a 2-story. Here's a link to a product that's supposed to solve this problem...

Re: Kitchen Cabinets

We're doing the same right now. I agree that the designer and installer are just as important as the cabinets themselves. One point not mentioned is that there are many "semi-custom" cabinets out there. They are made at 3" increments and come in endless options. They seem to be at a s...

Re: LED lights tripping circuit breaker?

Your breaker however has used up some of it's lifespan. Cheap insurance to replace it. Also not a bad idea to make a garage circuit GFCI.

Re: Moving Costs

I'm moving now locally, and can confirm it's a huge pain. Get rid of anything you can. You might also look into PODS, we rented one and it removes the time stress of having to get everything into the truck in one day.

Re: Any security concerns with Personal Capital?

I previously used Personal Capital to track all of my accounts. But, there are enough skeptics on Bogleheads so I changed my mind. Now I use Personal Capital to track my credit card and checking accounts only. The checking accounts have minimal $ in them. This setup allows me to track all of my exp...

Re: Eyeglasses: Warby Parker or Costco?

Can't speak to Costco, but I just got a pair of eyeglasses from Warby Parker and it was super easy. I did the "try before you buy" where you pick out 5 frames to try on and they ship them to you.

Re: Florida Tech?

Hey, finally a question I know something about! I graduated from Florida Tech (aka F.I.T. back in the day) in 1988. Having visited over the years, the facilities have improved dramatically since then. Florida Tech is (was?) really two schools - the engineering school part and the flight school part....

Take a look at Michael Linenberger's "Master Your Workday Now!". I implemented it a few years ago and it's been a lifesaver. If you wanted to check it out, read the first part of the free 1MTD ebook: https://www.michaellinenberger.com/1MTDvsMYN.html (highly recommended) If/When things get ...

Re: Comcast Grievance - How to get their attention?!

Had a similar issue with Verizon / Frontier. Many calls to their "customer support" line to no avail. I filed a complaint with the FCC, 2 days later a VP called me personally to fix my issue.

Best of luck.

Re: Have you cleaned your own carpets?

I have a home model carpet cleaning machine, it does a pretty good job on our carpets and couches. If you have a very big job or want a professional to do it, call a local company. I'd stay away from the rental machines, too much hassle getting & returning them, and you never know how clean they...

Re: Cancel collision coverage on older car?

[/quote] One factor for keeping collision coverage a little bit longer is that if another party is at fault for damage to your car - and the other party or insurance company balks at paying, file a collision claim and your insurance company will fight it for you. Re: Considering purchasing a new point-and-shoot camera

Either of the cameras you list would do a good job for you. You might prefer the Canon because it has the same control logic as your current camera, but either is good. I definitely concur with the recommendation to buy from B&H, Adorama, or another well-known outfit. If you can get to a shop t...

Perhaps the summons was lost in the mail and you didn't receive it.....? I knew a guy who that happened to for 30 years! Dave Yeah... DON'T do that. Some jurisdictions will issue a bench warrant for failure to respond which could get you arrested next time you cross paths with law inforcement such ...

Give this attorney a call - he specializes in bike accidents. http://sethdavidsonlaw.com/

I was involved in a car vs. bike accident a while back. The 30% that your attorney will take is well worth it - at least it was for me and I DIY almost everything :happy

Re: Ingenious Way To Find Reasonably Priced Painter

Ex-house painter here. A couple of points: 1) You doing part of the job (prep) is a red flag for me. Now I’m on the hook for your work if there’s problems in the future. 2) You wanting to buy the paint for me to use is another red flag. It may not be the paint my crew is familiar with, it may not be...
