Re: How to deal the fear of leaving a job to do another when you do not know the new job will work out?

It sounds like you don’t know what you want or where you are going, so that makes it difficult to decide what job to take. If you take jobs solely based on how much they pay, you may find yourself five or ten years down the road no better than you are now. I would suggest taking time to determine where you want to be in a decade. That may require reading about careers, seeking out advice, or even making lists of job attributes that you like or don't like and determine what may be a good fit. Once you do that you will have an easier time deciding if the job switch moves you closer to your goal.

Life is short and chasing after a dollar an hour raise won’t get you anywhere.

Re: Tracking your net worth. Now is a good time to start.

As an earnest question, what do people use their net worth for beyond a general assessment of how things are going? I am wondering why there is so much emphasis on the precision of something that is (to me) variable and of fairly limited value. Is this being used for something where being exact is necessary, such as a form of loan application, or is it just a foible? This is coming from someone who does evaluate net worth annually, but doesn’t spend time worrying about current house value or jewelry or cars. To meet the scale and mirror analogy used earlier, I am more concerned with the pounds than the 10ths of lbs, more concerned about the hundreds of thousands than the thousands of dollars.

Value the increase in pension as roughly 25 times the additional yearly payout. Essentially this is the approximate value of a portfolio you would need to take 4% of a year to have the same amount annually. In your example: Current 3 year avg salary of $65k with 40% pension = $26,000 per year x 25 = Value of $650k In one year, 3 year avg of approximately $70k with 42.5% pension = $29,750 per year x 25 = Value of $744k In two years, 3 year avg of approximately $75k with 45% pension = $33,750 per year x 25 = Value of $844k So two years gives you roughly a boost of $194k to your portfolio value. Subsequent years, assuming salary remains stable would add $75k x 0.025 x 25 = $46,875 portfolio value. These numbers are a little rough, but should ...

The daycare costs are making your budget feel a lot tighter than it really is. Everything gets a lot better once the kids are all in school, however the financial boon isn’t the full cost of daycare since there will be new hurdles with teacher work days and various breaks and holidays that need covered. Personally, when my kids were that age I didn’t have the time or energy for many hobbies so we just kept plowing through our plan until the kids were a bit older. Now I feel more financially and psychologically ready to splurge a bit.

If this is just a cost issue, check your local library to see if they offer fax service, it is usually cheap if they do. Also, consider putting two pages on a single page (two pages positioned side by side when the paper is rotated 90 degrees) to cut the cost in half. However, it is probably not cost effective to spend hours of your time to save a few bucks.

If you plan on going to a new position I would suggest the following: Keep a copy of the termination notice. Make sure you don’t sign or e-mail any agreement to stay on or to release them from their earlier statement of termination.

Also, there have been cases of employers forcing existing employees to sign new contracts with additional terms (non-competes, etc) where the updated contracts have been thrown out by courts due to the employer not offering anything in the new contract. Usually employers have to offer something like a bonus to make the new contract enforceable. I am not a lawyer but I would consider consulting one if you decide to stick with your current employer.

Some of the comments here seem overly conservative to me. I think this is due to dealing with percentages only, and I had to put the percentages into dollar amounts to have a better understanding of the OP’s situation. Hypothetically (imaginary numbers since OP didn’t want to share the real numbers), OP has expenses of $40,000 per year but has a net worth of $2.67 million. That is a 1.5% WR. Now they are talking about increasing net worth by 4%, which would be $100,000 in this scenario. Going from $2.67 mil to $2.77 mil does not seem worth the effort to me. For big spenders, (again, imaginary numbers), OP spends $120,000 per year and has $8 million and is asking if they need to keep going to get to $8.3 million. 😀 I think you should just le...

I can stay 20 feet from the nests and can get the sevin right up inside the hole of the nest. I apply the solution to the eaves in spring and fall to prevent more nests and to prevent the queens from wintering in the attic. We have German yellowjackets, an invasive species in the northeastern US, and it took a few years to figure out a good control regimen. Before that we would have multiple hives in our eaves or shed each year and in the spring a lot of the wasps would find their way into the house.

Ninja anodized pans. About $30-$50 per pot/pan. I hand wash and use very sparse amounts of oil while cooking and eggs slide around the pan if I tilt it with no effort to unstick. You have to follow the preheat instructions carefully and I choose to hand wash them to make them last longer, but you are supposed to be able to machine wash and use metal spatulas in them.

Most pans can be made “less stick” if you preheat them and never put food or oil in a cold pan.

Beyond the financial considerations, being able to live within walking distance to the hospital is a huge plus when you are waking up early to get in or are leaving exhausted after a call shift.

Re: Payroll experts: prorating salary calculation gone wrong?

I work with a system that pays biweekly so all pay periods have 10 days, so the math is simpler. It sounds like in the system you describe (example 1) the employee would get a better deal during longer pay periods and a worse deal during short pay periods, since the cost is an average over the year but there may be fluctuations in the length of the semi monthly pay periods. The average length of a pay period is 10.83 days (260/24). The system they chose seems to reverse the deal. Imagine a short pay period with 8 days and only 2 worked: 2083 - 6 * 192.31 = 919.14 / 2 = 464.57 per day, so each worked day is worth more. The third system you describe makes the most sense to keep things even. Now, knowing their system, just try to take more tim...

I understand why this may not reflect the experience of an already 65-year-old, but the fact remains that on average a man would spend six years in retirement. Not the average man who makes it to retirement, just the average man. So you are saying he should have specified "You want to either die before 70 or retire at 70 and have six years left to retire..." Neither seems that appealing to me. This is a subject about which there is much misunderstanding...t...

Re: Bone in my food

I ordered take out from Chipotle on Friday, just got around to eating it last night. I kept it and contacted their customer service. Do I bring the bone into the store and show the manager? Never was a big fan of their chicken but it is the only meat that I eat from them. Very odd post. First, why did you go there for food, then not eat it until FIVE days later? Re: Radon

We had a level of 3.8 at the time of our home purchase 2 years ago and decided to remediate after I read through the studies on radon and lung cancer risk. I work at home and we have two young children. Also, our test was run in the spring and levels can fluctuate at different points in the year. After remediation the test came back with a level of 0.4 so it certainly brought us some piece of mind.
