Re: What is your favorite non fiction book?

The first non-fiction books, fewer than 400 pages, that spring to mind are: "The Perfect Storm" by Sebastian Junger (gripping!) "Into Thin Air" by Jon Krakauer (unbelievable) "The Botany of Desire: A Plant's-Eye View of the World" by Michael Pollan (" How could flo...

Re: Bird watchers – what birds are you seeing?

The ospreys returned to New York just this week! Very exciting to watch them swoop and soar o're the harbor waters. Kingfishers arrived here but one year ago, braving the cold winter, yet now seem very quiet with the sea hawks back in town. Spied a blue-grey heron and a red-tailed hawk yesterday, to...

Re: Two Days on Long Island

Drive to Robert Moses Beach (gorgeous, quiet, soft sandy south shore beach on the western end of Fire Island), relax and swim. Walk along the trail to the lighthouse and onto Kismet for lunch or an early dinner. Stroll back along the water's edge. Teddy Roosevelt's Sagamore Hill is also a great idea...

Re: Tips for staying active / injury-free into older age

The human body is designed for walking, so daily walks (barring an out-of-sorts Mother Nature) are medicinal and transporting ~ never know where your mind will wander, what birds will call, what clouds or sea spray will catch your eye ~ Mix up your exercise regime, so as to avoid overuse injuries, a...

Tweets led me to sell some great defense stocks (drat) ... but can't argue with profit-taking.

Next time must remember to take some profit, not all, and tone down the noise.

Love your advice, Mr. Dogg: "Watch the 1960 movie "Where The Boys Are" and you will see the ocean distance away from A-1-A (across from the Elbo Room) and compare it to today. The distance from the ocean to A-1-A is exactly the same today. As a high schooler here 57 years ago I remem...

Five of my sister's family members were scheduled for a cruise, when the grandmother passed away unexpectedly. Another family member took Grandmother's place, with little fanfare, and just what the grandmother would have wanted.

The Perfect Storm - Sebastian Junger
Into Thin Air - J. Krakauer
Unbroken - L. Hillenbrand

There are so many not-to-be-missed survival stories in young-adult literature. Great way to bond with children, grandchildren. Fun to revisit, too.

Re: How do you handle switching your handbag?

This girlie-girl's routine: occasionally switch between two leather pocketbooks (one brown - one black) for as long as possible. Reorganizing bags does require concentration -- I empty contents onto large dining room table, then carefully sift, sort, and purge -- but have it down pat by now. However...
