Re: Ally cd - call protected?

Why would you buy an Ally 5-year CD that pays 4.1% when you can buy 5-year treasuries that pay a higher rate, with interest exempt from state income tax? And those treasuries are much more liquid. It is pretty easy to liquidate a CD at ally - click a button - done - whereas I hear lots of people freaking out regarding their treasuries having to call the "bond desk" to get help liquidating them in order to get the money fast. I like Ally CDs because that is where our emergency fund is, cash is - and it is very easy to deal with. I do wish Ally had the treasury option but they don't. I pay a slight premium for the benefit. I don't flip flop just because rates move around. I also have Treasuries as well at Fido in our Brokerage acco...

Re: Ally cd - call protected?

Thanks, everyone. I don't really understand treasuries. I may be wrong, but it seems like those rates can change. I mainly hold a target retirement fund for a long time, now. But overall, my return is 6.1%. Seems like a lot of risk to take on for that kind of return. Though I don't plan to change it. But above retirement accounts, it seems to make sense to lock in a 4.0% or so interest rate. That site with the annuities looks interesting, thanks so much! I still have a sour taste in my mouth when I hear that word. Happy to hear more thoughts. They are pretty easy to buy (treasuries) - heck - to learn more about them - buy a short term one - and see how it works out. The best part is the no state income tax. I definitely take advantage of t...

So do you think the CD from Ally will maintain the interest rate for 4-5 years if I sign up for that?
I just finished 2 5 year CDs with Ally - that have auto-rolled into a couple 18month CDs at 5% + with an extra small % for having kept the CDs.

Never an issue even when going the rate was terrible and lower than what I had on the CDs.

I haven't read any of this thread - the opening was crazy long - but the subject: Pay Advice Nephew - grabbed my attention. I have a funny story. My first Tech job was in the early 90's - I needed advice on how to negotiate the salary - that was the next step in my interview process (Bay Area Database Company) I went to my sister in law who worked at Apple. She said a programmer analyst makes about 30-45K per year. Cool - I have the info. Day of interview - the interviewer says "So have you thought about what your salary?" Dumb 20 year old me says: "We'll my sister in law works at Apple she said they make between 30 and 45K (emphasis on 45K)" He said: "Ok how about 30?" Doh!!! He was an awesome boss and took gr...

Re: Using HSA Disbursements to Fund IRA/401K

The advantage is you can get the tax break twice. Once when you contribute to the HSA, then you withdraw for medical expenses tax free and contribute THOSE dollars to the 401k/tIRA for more tax deferral. Thanks to you as well - as to my question to Jeff - I still don't see the 'more tax deferral' by moving to tIra - I'm missing something. Thanks! Contribute 1000 to HSA at 22% bracket - save 220 in taxes. Withdraw 1000 from HSA for reimbursable healthcare expenses - pay no taxes on withdrawal. Increase 401k contributions by that same 1000 - save 220 in taxes. Net tax saved is 440. There might also be an argument to be had that pulling the 1000 worth of reimbursement out now is more valuable to you than pulling 1000 out for that same receipt...

But what about if the 1,000$ in the HSA is invested in say TSM. Wouldn't this just be a wash ? My HSA is invested in VG TSM (with the majority in a target date fund VG). You would still get the HSA later tax free - as long as you have the receipts collected over many years. Why would it matter what it is invested in? It matters in terms of the previous poster's point that 1K in an HSA doesn't grow like 1K in a Roth - which didn't make sense to me. I might be completely missing the math on this so forgive me if this doesn’t make sense. Each year I have the ability to max my HSA but do not make enough money to max out my 401k or IRA. I currently have around $15,000 in my HSA with around $2,500 of medical claims that I have not reimbursed myself from the HSA. My question is because I do not make enough to max out other tax advantaged accounts does it make sense to pull the $2,500 and invest into an IRA to get a double tax advantage in this tax year? My investment strategy will remain the same I am simply moving money from the HSA to IRA. I'd just leave it alone - and use it in the future when you will need it. Our HSA is simply growing and growing. All medical expenses now come out of ...

Re: Keep $ in former employer's Fidelity 401k plan or move to IRA?

If you ever need the ability to back door roth - you will not want to have a TIRA with a large balance (I believe called basis?). You would prefer to keep your old employer 401K - or roll that 401K into a new employer 401K.

In our situation because I have a tIra with basis - it would be a hassle to do a Roth conversion - so instead I do Roth conversions for my wife as she doesn't have a tIra with a balance.

Re: There is No Good Account to Hold TIPS

Isn't the idea to take from your various IRA, Roth, 401k accounts in retirement - such that you pay minimal taxes? I'm expecting my tax rate to drop considerably once I stop working. How to your determine the mix between accounts if you don't know what the tax brackets will be when you retire? Also, for many BH a meaningful portion of their current income is being contributed to tax deferred accounts or they have deduction for kids and a mortgage. Those deductions go away in retirement. It is probably doable but it seems like it will take considerable planning or lower annual spending. We are currently at the second highest tax bracket with my income - once that income is gone - that will definitely change (be reduced). So yes - I don't kn...

FIPDX pays monthly - I just checked my Fido account. Now that I have FXNAX (TBM) and FIPDX at closely the same amount in this one IRA account - it will be interesting to see the differences in dividend payout.
FIPDX monthly distributions have been miniscule, on the order of $2.60 per $10,000 monthly (about 0.3% per annum).
Agreed they are super small - so I assume there will be a large distribution either yearly or bi-yearly?
I own FIPDX in a workplace retirement account. The large distribution comes yearly, and it has been December 22 for me the last two years (2021 and 2022). So if history holds, it's coming up soon.

Re: TIPS Fixed Income Exposure > FIPDX?

I recently did something similar, with SCHP. For me it was diversification reasons, in a total return portfolio. I read many threads here about how direct investment in TIPS, or laddering, would be better and perhaps it would be. But in the end I just decided that it was more complicated than I wanted, and that just having some exposure to TIPS in a fund should be fine. Not that it is relevant at all on such a short time period, but so far the TIPS fund is up, seems slightly less volatile than the other bond funds I'm in. I also decided in my case the move would probably not make much difference, in the long-run, but still made the investment for diversification. Exactly the same for me - I wanted to diversify our fixed asset allocation. M...

Re: TIPS Fixed Income Exposure > FIPDX?

TIPS are what they are and a TIPS fund is what it is. An intermediate duration TIPS fund is a perfectly reasonable and useful choice in a portfolio of stock and bond funds. Agonizing over the exact duration, the exact yield today, etc., is a waste of time. There are several perfectly good low cost TIPS funds or ETFs such as FIPDX. You can use any of them as you like. The one note about FIPDX is that the dividend payment may be infrequent such as annually compared to other funds that typically pay quarterly. This does not affect the return for a long term investor in stocks and bonds. Great post - that agonizing is something I've been doing since the first mention of TIPS here. FIPDX pays monthly - I just checked my Fido account. Now that I...

I bought a 10 year (91282CEZ0) based on recommendations here - and it is down 1K currently (out of 10K). Did I buy the wrong TIPs? A TIPS fund with a similar 10 YR duration would be down a similar amount. This is duration risk showing up as the market starts to push up rates (and prices down) on longer issue Treasuries, including TIPS. If your need is 10 YRs from now and you hold to maturity, you didn't buy the wrong TIPS. If your need is 5 YRs from now, you may have bought too long of a bond. Thanks - yes - I understand that I'm good if I wait the 10 years - but are there better 10 year TIPs available now - and I'm stuck with this - or is it a wash - that it will all work out to be the same in the end? Re: My $58 coffee bean burr grinder burned out. Need a new one. Suggestions??

My @150.00 Baritza that I've had for close to 6 years broke about a month ago. I found the two parts necessary - ordered them - @29 bucks. In the meantime my wife went to Walmart and got a cheap backup grinder (with the spinning blade) for about 16 bucks - that cheap grinder - grinds the beans in about 30 seconds whereas the fancy one takes about a minute plus and is crazy loud the entire time.

Anyhow the Baritza is back but man that cheapo backup grinder sure does the job quickly.

We both love the look of the Baritza in our coffee bar area - and we both agree the cheap 'o' one does the job and does it so much faster.

Re: Another TIPS ladder vs fund question - leaning toward a fund

Thanks - how do you fund these 6 month purchases and I assume you have to explicitly do this and not have it automated? I assume you just have the 401K type money in a money market - then buy the TIPS or do you sell stocks/bonds to be able to buy every 6 months? My brokerage link simply buys FIPDX every two weeks - so it is simple. My 401k allows me to buy individual bonds. So for new issues, yes, a portion of my per-paycheck investment allocation goes into MMF (with 50% match, yay), which every 6 months I use to buy at auction. But a good chunk of my ladder was purchased over a shorter period of time, too, when I reduced my stock allocation 2021 due to approaching early retirement age in 2-4 years. Those live in a traditional rollover IRA...

Re: Another TIPS ladder vs fund question - leaning toward a fund

Today I made some more individual TIPS purchases. In summary, over the past week I bought approx $145K of individual TIPS. This is about 6% of my portfolio. All these purchases were done in an inherited IRA that I was planning to liquidate no later than 2035. At most this will generate a little over $1.1K per year in coupons (which is fine because I have RMDs in this account). The TIPS span 7 years from 2027 to 2033 (no tips from in 2034, 2035 but not an issue). Although all done inside the IRA, I made a double switch with my 401K effectively meaning all the money for these purchases came from my 401K's stable value fund that was paying less than 4%. The rest of my owned TIPS are held in a fund inside the 401K. So I did end up with a combi...

My phone is muted so doesn't bother me in the slightest.

Just start out with the doorbell and see how that goes. I use the battery version since I don't have power to the doorbell - lasts a very long time on a charge.

Not from health standpoint.

Edit: And I love Mc'y Ds - I just must stay away.

What's the difference between paying taxes on nominals vs TIPS in a taxable? Seems to me one pays taxes on the entire return for both. Assuming one doesn't have tax deferred available of course.
There is lots of info on this forum on why this is not desirable (ghost income.) I only use tax deferred for TIPS - my 401K and my tIra.

Yes, it's real rate. Note the difference between the real yield to maturity (2.3x) vs. the coupon of the bond (1.50) and be sure you understand the difference before you purchase.
I'd like to know why too. Is it because a zero coupon would be better and not pay out? Thanks.
In a taxable account, you pay income tax on the inflation adjustments even though you won't see that money until it matures.
Thanks- I'd never want TIPs in taxable - only tax deferred for me.

Re: With rising yields, owning a home looks less attractive

Owning a home less attractive? Nope - I can't find any reason why I'd be unhappy to own my own home.

In fact my home price is at an all time high - and houses nearby are selling within days.

I love owning my home. The one thing that inflation isn't choking me with - my groceries etc are all much higher and I find that I'm spending more on basic things and saving less.

Re: Buy or lease a new car?

I'm starting to come around to the Lease idea and not thinking it is so asinine. I'll likely start a new thread when I'm ready - but we will definitely need a new AWD in retirement. My goal was a Subaru Forester - it meets all our needs. Now I can outlay 50K on one - then I'm stuck with it for 10+ years - which could be good or could be bad - OR - I can compromise and do a lease special on a different model (not all cars have leases as an option) that they have a Lease special on - this model is Electric - and pretty much the same vehicle - but the lease is only 2900.00 followed by 399 per month 36 months. 2900 is pretty much peanuts out of the savings vs the 50K outlay. 399 a month isn't too painful and in retirement would likely be nice ...

Re: Allow-List Landline System?

AT&T and Panasonic both sell phones with white list functionality. I have an AT&T phone similar to this one: https://www.amazon.com/AT-CL82307-Expan ... B0735Q3Z6T I have it configured to let callers on my whitelist ring directly through, and all other callers hear a message asking them to press the # key to ring through. This defeats 99.9% of telemarketers and robocallers. Those calls don't go to voice mail (or the built in answering machine) so I don't get recorded messages from those calls. Only whitelist callers and callers who pass the # test get a chance to leave a message if I don't pickup. The phone has some other options for screening callers, such as having them record their name, which I don't use. Thanks! That's good to...

Re: Question re transporting a kayak?

I have the cadillac of Kayaks - a very long Tandem Hoby Cat. If you know someone with a Land Cruiser, Suburban, Yukon with a typically roof rack (two bars across the top) - you simply place that sucker on the roof - and secure each bar with those kayak tie down straps - and simply use rope on the nose of the kayak to secure the nose - to the front bumper of the truck (prevents the kayak from moving backwards and side to side.) Then you are good to go.

Re: Explain email 2FA to me like I'm 5 years old

You have a Mac and an iPhone - both excellent for security as long as you keep the OS' in each updated/current. I'd recommend to use one of the email accounts as the most secure and use that one for all your finances - I'd pick the Google account. I say Google because you can opt into their Advanced Security Feature which will make that email account most secure. It will require a couple hardware tokens - one can be your iphone - the others would be yubikeys. I use 2 yubikeys and my iphone as my security key for my email account. No one can gain access to my email w/o the hardware key. You then lock down the other emails with 2FA and even Yubikey if they provide for that - I do that with my only other email account. When you have your gmail...

Re: Best sleep monitoring for my use case

I use my apple watch - and I sleep with the bed inclined (that was a major help in snoring - major improvement.) There is a free app that records your snoring (snorelab). I'm working with the Doctors and my end goal will be an oral appliance. I just wish it was easier to obtain w/o all the Dr appts. Edit: And Napbot app (free) does show Apnea - but what that means who knows as only a Dr can really decide - I just look for reductions - cause and effect (ex eating late) I use snorelab on my iPhone, I think they have an android version. It helped me make some changes (examples: it showed sleeping on side as an improvement, and using nose strips toned down my "epic" snores). I finally caved in and have an upcoming appointment at a sl...
