For sure. Amazing how many cheapskates there are on this page.

I'd be interested in why you say "there is much more risk in the underlying real estate than most sponsors would have you believe." The sponsors lay out pages and pages of risks. Do you have any specific knowledge or just guessing? I don't love the high fees but I do like the ability to create great diversification and having people select and manage real estate who are more knowledgeable than me. Would be interested what you know.BillWalters wrote: ↑Tue Dec 21, 2021 7:25 am In my experience the fees are way too high and there is much more risk in the underlying real estate than most sponsors would have you believe. Over the long term you’re probably better paying the taxes and investing normally.

I would take a guess (but just a guess) that the family is only liable up to the extent they received assets from your brother. So if sis took the $4k I would think she could be liable for up to $4k. I can think of no reason why family would be liable for more than $4k. You were not your brother's keeper so to speak. Good luck. Oh ya, and hire a lawyer if you want a real answer.

I look at it a different way. If a $20k asset is a small'ish investment to you then cash it and put the cash with your other assets. That's what I would do. I don't like having my money spread out in small increments with different companies. On the other hand if you are uninsurable then maybe you should keep it!?

He sold everything he owned, including his goat and packed his volvo wagon and a small trailer with what he really had to keep. Once in Texas, he bought all new stuff (except for a goat). He had been given a moving allowance check by the company who hired him for $10k (in 1992) and easily bought everything he needed with that money. You might want to take that lead and offload everything to save the cost. Of course, you're going a much shorter distance.

Travel is a big one for us. We spent $65k last year on travel. That includes our kids. We plan to travel more in a few years when retired and kids are off at college. I could see spending $100k a year on travel for a while. Our total expected spend is between $350k-400k in retirement.

As others have pointed out for as little as you drive I would not bother with the warranty if it were me... unless you are one that would sleep better with the safety net. In the net it's $3,500 so it's not going to make or break you (I assume). So if you will not sleep soundly then just get it. The technically correct answer is one thing and the touchy-feely emotional answer might be something different.

The last 500 will be harder even though I rarely play the actual CDs. It felt really good to get those drawers back... though only to quickly fill up with other junk we don't need.

In California I have never had a dealer tell me no. In recent years they typically try to cap it at $3,500 but last car I was able to do $10k in a last second negotiation add on by me. I figured at 2.5% back it was worth it. Sure, I understand they are paying more than 2% and that's factored into the deal, but once you have negotiated the best deal you can that's one way to get a few more bucks back.

I have never heard of the 7% but I would say that's a rule of thumb. In our area, for example, the two electric providers charge significantly different rates so people on the other side of the tracks pay much more. We are at about 11% between gas and electric.

Re: Divorce [financial implications]
As to pre-nups I believe you can agree to almost anything in them. That is you clearly state what assets each party has before marriage and, presumably, that those assets and the growth remain the separate property of each. You could probably negotiate away spousal support if there was a divorce. I have seen documents that provide the "poor" spouse a cash payout depending on how long the marriage was (i.e. $25k for one year and $100k for 10 years or some such thing). You might be able to negotiate away child support payments but that might not be allowed due to public policy concerns. Pre-nups are an area you want to go to a high level expert and not use an internet form. Lots of ways to mess it up!

I have a slightly different take, in that I was on the receiving end of a hostile divorce, and lawyers were a must. The collaborative/single lawyer/mediation approach was suggested at one point, but there was nothing about my wife's approach that was oriented toward mediation or working anything out, and she made it clear she was coming for the money at the exact moment we hit our lifetime savings goal of half a million. Assets were divided in half due to legal precedence, even though I earned twice what she earned, so splitting it 50/50 was like winning the lottery for her. Family lawyers are not CPA's, and didn't understand some of the finer points of our assets, such as tax liability for 401k's, who pays property tax on a shared home du...

I think it depends on the type of job.
I have hired for sales type jobs and the person is not getting hired if they don't follow up a couple times and preferably more than just an email. Note I said "sales type" job with emphasis on type. Anything where you might deal with the public or at least tangentially selling something.
If it's more backroom technician then one email is probably sufficient. Although, to me the thank you note should always be written rather than emailed but maybe I am old fashioned.
Good luck.

List it for sale while you think about it. Just start high. $75k to start. Good luck! I don't think that strategy in real estate generally works? You discourage all the casual buyers, or those with a particular shopping list and a price. If they see a price that is not a bargain, that may be well over market, they don't want the hassle of beating the seller down, so they just pass. It's better, usually, to put it on the market a bit below market value and see if it evinces any interest. Ya, I hear ya. I think in a regular home sale your thoughts are accurate. However, in a lot situation if someone decides your lot costs a bit more because the view must be better than other lots, etc... maybe the seller can find a buyer that stumbles it jus...

I believe y'all are talking about gift tax limits. However, if you have less than $11m it's really academic. You can give what you want to a 529 and, at most, file a 709 gift tax return. Actually, the number to be concerned about isn't $11M but half of that. Because under current tax law, the Federal estate tax exemption will revert to that (plus inflation) in 2026. So, assuming you die after that, they'll probably look at what you have then plus what you gifted before that and tax any amount over the (about) $5.5M. I know I'm nit-picking here, but I'll bet there are a number of Bogleheads who fall into the 6 to 12 $million category for which this is an issue. Bottom line for the Original Poster is that a good accountant (cheaper than an e...

Re: If I contributed 30k to a 529 last year, but contributed more this year, will I be penalized?
I believe y'all are talking about gift tax limits. However, if you have less than $11m it's really academic. You can give what you want to a 529 and, at most, file a 709 gift tax return.

After reading all the threads on the internet about how Edward Jones has really high fees, I have been considering moving my Edward Jones IRAs to Vanguard or Fidelity based on everyone's recommendations. However, my current Vanguard 401K (2045 target fund portfolio) has a YTD return of -1.17%. My Edward Jones Guided Solutions IRAs have a YTD return of 4.46%. For the past year or so, my EJ accounts have substantially out performed my Vanguard 401k. Do these results make sense? I think my EJ account is mostly mutual funds and/or index funds my advisor selected. Are there Vanguard funds that are easy to select that would have yielded me returns similar to my EJ account for the year so far? I have no problem paying more in fee...
