Re: [What TV Show Have You Recently Watched?]

Just finished all seven seasons of VEEP, streaming on Max (via Hulu for me).

This is a really dark, almost black, comedy. Very well written, produced, and acted. However it's odd in the sense that I was kind of relieved it was over because while the writing is razor sharp, it's kind of an "ugly" funny. I'm not sure I'm explaining it well. I liken it a bit to "Shameless" where I felt a mix of horror, sadness, and amusement for most of the series. Unlike many series, the ending is well done, seems they took a hint from "Six Feet Under" for it.

When I think of how dysfunctional real politics seems to be I wonder how far off this show is from reality? :)

I take a full recovery week about every 8-10 weeks. I can tell when I need one because I feel tired and my workouts are difficult. My goal is to stay muscular without hurting myself and keep this slower, casual pace of workout throughout my lifetime.

Re: Live Symphony to Star Wars movie.

Hi - we have seen a number of movies in this format where the score is performed by the fantastic Erie Philharmonic while you watch the movie on a huge screen hanging over the orchestra.

This is the list so far, all of them were excellent:

Toy Story
Mary Poppins
Star Wars (Episode 3 and 4, 5 is in the 2024-25 season)
Harry Potter (the first movie)

Next season they are also doing Frozen. You can't go wrong with any movie scored by John Williams. I am hoping our local symphony does Jurassic Park someday.

I have to use offsite parking at the airport and thus use the free shuttle from the parking lot quite often. I don't have luggage as I use a backpack and I don't usually tip since the driver is just opening the door for me. If I have a $5 on me I will give it but I usually do not. If I had luggage and the driver helped me with it then I'd probably tip. However after reading this thread now I feel guilty for not tipping!

Leave The World Behind - a 10/10, and this week's news about Putin putting nukes in space to attack our satellites sent a chill down my spine. Now reading the book. This is a must-see movie. Better than I expected! I thought it was excellent just about from the moment it started. And, was staying that way while watching. Highly suspenseful movie. However, it had a completely unsatisfactory ending. I no inkling it was going to end until it just did. During the movie there were tons of intimations of this and this but they were all left unresolved by the abrupt ending of the movie. Just watched this last night. I also felt that the movie started off pretty strongly but the pacing really fell off in the middle and last third. They spent a lot...

Do you have hard water? Those could possibly be spots from minerals in the water.

I have a similar electric kettle - if you're not doing this already, make sure to empty the kettle after each use and don't allow water to sit in it overnight.

I really love the Trader Joe's pizzas. My current favorite is Tarte D'Alsace, a french style flat bread with crème fraiche, ham, caramelized onions & Swiss-style gruyere cheese. I add artichoke hearts and fold it in half to eat it. In the past, I babied a sourdough starter and made an absolutely delicious sourdough pizza crust for a home-baked pizza. I often worry about who would care for our dogs if both of us were incapacitated (in an accident perhaps). We do plan to do the CCRC route. I just finished all 11 seasons of "Curb Your Enthusiasm" over the course of a few months. Overall I'd say i enjoyed it, although the later seasons started to drag and feel repetitive/annoying. In my opinion the show became less interesting to me (spoiler) once the two main characters got divorced.. In my opinion this is a great background show to watch while you are playing a video game or working. There are definitely some funny parts I'll remember for a long time (like the Aunt's obituary).

I dislike frying at home due to the mess/oil waste so I often "fry" food in the oven. This is a new favorite recipe for roasted paneer:

https://summeryule.com/roasted-paneer/

You can vary the spices to your taste and experiment. Just a note, if you bake the paneer longer than 10 min, it will become tough and chewy. My husband likes it that way, but if you want it with a less jerky-like texture stick to 10 minutes.

It took the worst possible route, IMO, to prove that point. Just watch Higher Learning and you can get the same thing with better writing and acting.
I watched this yesterday. It reminded me a lot of the Adam Sandler movie "Uncut Gems" where I was so uncomfortable with the terrible risks and poor decisions the main character was making. I thought it was worth the watch overall, so thanks for mentioning it.

Update today - repair tech stopped by and confirmed it was the compressor. He gave me a write-up about it and said I could try to present it to LG even though it's showing up as out of warranty, but he recommended just replacing it with a GE which we did. Per LG's website we are out of warranty although per my post above the wording is ambiguous whether or not we're eligible for the 5 year extended compressor warranty. I will try to call them in between meetings to confirm.

Second refrigerator issue in 2 years

Hello Bogleheads! We bought our home in 2020 and we used the existing refrigerator which was only a few years old at the time. In 2021 it stopped cooling, we did initial troubleshooting and consulted a professional who told us the board needed replacement but the part was backordered for months. We decided to just buy a new fridge in 2021 which was working fine until two days ago when we had almost the same exact issue. The freezer and refrigerator are no longer cooling and the board has a red light flashing on it 3 times in succession. Per our research this could mean a number of issues including a bad board, bad temperature sensor, bad starter relay, or bad compressor. The current model is an LG LRDCS2603S. This seems to be a trend and I'...

I'm biased, but on the small side, may I recommend Erie, PA? It's very affordable, has a few great school districts, and good local colleges. Great uncrowded access to lake Erie, and 3 larger cities within 1.5-2 hour drives (Cleveland, Buffalo, Pittsburgh). The newly renovated Warner Theater has its own Philharmonic and brings in Broadway shows/concerts. Beautiful bayfront which is getting a much-needed facelift over the next few years. I had to fly to Dubai from ORD (Chicago) last December for business. I took Emirates Airlines. On the way from ORD->Dubai (13 hours) I sat in economy in a bulkhead seat which was about a $150 upgrade. It was okay, I did manage a few hours of sleep, but my body (especially my hips) were sore for about an entire day. Food/service was adequate. I was on the innermost seat so I could lean against the side of the plane. I wouldn't say it was enjoyable but it was tolerable. I was 47 then and am used to using a standing desk so sitting that long is pretty miserable for me. On the return trip (15 hours) I was emailed an offer to upgrade to business class for $1500 which I immediately purchased. It was my first time ever in a class above economy +. ...

Re: [What TV Show Have You Recently Watched?]

Just finished all six seasons of "The Americans" streaming on Hulu. Overall I liked it and am glad I watched it although I felt I had to suspend disbelief quite often. Like any show there are episodes that are kind of boring and some that I'll probably remember for a long time. I'm not sure but the last season felt a bit rushed but I thought the ending was decent if not a bit unsatisfying. The most memorable (and sad) scene for me of any TV series is a once exuberant character in "The Americans" who is briefly seen in another context, with a completely different demeanor, no fault of his/her own. Part of me wants a spin-off to follow what happened, but that would probably ruin it. I guess I like having the message about...

I just finished this episode a few minutes ago and agree. If the series doesn't win an award solely for that episode I'd be surprised. Can't think of any way to describe it except "Wow".

"Living" streamed on Netflix, stars Bill Nighy. Understated, emotional, beautiful British film. I really recommend this one and will probably watch it again.

Agree, buying from thrift stores is similar to an HSA in that there are 3 amazing advantages:

- you save money
- you rescue clothes that might otherwise be binned
- you support the thrift store employees

Re: Whole Foods' Palm Scanning Technology: Are you all in?

I wouldn't mind this as an option, it would certainly help if I had a cartful of groceries and realized I forgot or lost both my phone and wallet. That's one of my greatest fears when I travel, that I will lose my phone and/or wallet and have a difficult time getting back home.

"I've Loved You So Long" - a French film, from Netflix on DVD. Somewhat dark subject material but I enjoyed and recommend it!

Then once you prove to yourself that you are in this for the long run you can then spend more serious money. Which if you keep at it will then lead to you spending more and more serious money as you refine your game.
But you will be spending it wisely as it will be something you will be frequently and actively using and which provides you with great enjoyment.
Really great advice! I did the same with my musical instruments! And furniture, clothes, etc.

Re: 2-Story House Elderly Parent

I can empathize. My mom is 87 and lives in a 4 floor home with 4 bedrooms by herself. The laundry is the basement, the single bathroom is upstairs as are the bedrooms. She even goes in the attic still, which has a crazy narrow winding staircase. I worry all the time but she refuses to move. We've been asking her off and on for a decade now to move to a senior apartment (we'd pay for it) or move in with my brother or myself. She hasn't fallen in the house yet. It's not worth remodeling the home because she lives in a small declining town where home prices are extremely low.
