How close are you to your goal? If your goal is 25x expenses and you're currently at 12x expenses then your asset allocation of 70/30 to 80/20 is fine. I got lucky with 100/0 for most of my investing career. Moved to 80/20 and 60/40 very quickly when we hit 22x expenses. 60/40 can get us 3x expenses with less risk.

If I drop ex-US and then call it good because "Jack said so" or I think the rest of the world sucks because of my personal and political biases etc..., do I get a free pass and hand waive people off when I get called a performance chaser?

To me it means reducing risk when you're close or you've arrived at your goal. Example being that we're close to 22x expenses. We were mostly 100/0 during accumulation. It depends on how close you are to your goal.

If it's 10 to 15 years away, then holding around 20% bonds would work.

Worse case would be a nasty crash and then have a lost decade.
