I recall years ago someone telling me some techniques for inspecting Persian rugs when buying. One was to test for color fastness (I think using salt water). I admit that I don't do this myself and I suspect that the sales staff might not be too happy if I asked to do so.

Of items I've mailed by first class USPS mail recently, 3 have not arrived to the destination after 3 weeks or more and 3 others took over 3 weeks to be delivered. Up until the last several months, USPS has been very reliable for decades in my experience.

Some comments above suggested oil or oil soap. Our hardwood installer said not to use anything with wax or oil as it would make applying another coat of finish impossible short of completely sanding down to bare wood.
