Re: buying a rental property vs investing more in stocks
Huh. Has worked out great for my family for over 20 years so it seems like until you actually do it you shouldn't be a naysayer, eh!? What percent of your gross rent goes to management fees? Between 6 and 10% in different cities with 8% being the most common. That's cheap for not being responsible ...

Re: Online Savings vs No Penalty CD
No penalty cd seems too good to be true. If you anticipate needing the money, recommend using intervals of $25'K so the rest of your money continues to grow.

Ally no penalty CD rate increase
[Thread merged into here, see below. --admin LadyGeek] Ally increased the rate of its no penalty cd to 1.5% for accounts with 25'K and above. It's a great deal, they allow you to withdraw the balance and interest after six days of the initial deposit without penalty. Just passing along for those lo...

Re: Play Money for Spouse....
There are a lot of great suggestions on here. My wife has her own checking account and credit card that she can use for personal purchases. I also have my own credit card I'll use for gifts or personal purchases. Although > 95% of our finances are joint accounts/ credit cards, the individual checkin...

Re: High School Graduation Gifts
Larry, I forgot to include our typical gifts. For high school we typically mail a $20-$25 check for kids we don't know that well. For college we've started sending books that I wish I had read when I was in my early 20s. Recently we sent Random Walk Down Wall Street and Millionaire Next Door . My go...

Re: High School Graduation Gifts
This is a very timely topic. I like the book idea from physics teacher. What is the expectation on thank you notes? We rarely receive thank you from checks or gifts we send, which is frustrating. Is there an easy way to bring it up? Taking a few minutes to write a note or even an email goes a long w...

Re: I've had it with USAA insurance
I have used USAA for over 40 years. I am not concerned about the cost. But I can say that the speed that they handle a claim is great. Over the years I have had two cars totaled and a significant damage on another. Recently a tree fell on one house causing 52K of damage. The claim service was great...
