I am 42 years old and I plan to invest the maximum allowed in my Employer provided 401K. My spouse is 36 and a home maker and we invest maximum allowed 6K in her traditional IRA. We deduct the 401K contribution and my wife's IRA contribution while filing our taxes as expected. I'm a little confused...

As neverpanic noted, contributions to a 401(k) do not count against the annual contribution limit to a Roth IRA.
